Every year, approximately 1 in 10 babies worldwide are born prematurely, that is, before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Complications from preterm birth are the leading cause of death for children under five, and survivors may face long-term health and developmental challenges. Today, on World Prematurity Day, we join the global movement to raise awareness about the care preterm infants need and the support their families deserve.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ensuring quality neonatal care, strengthening maternal health services, and promoting equity in access to care are essential to give these tiny lives the strongest possible start.

If you are expecting, caring for a newborn, or supporting a preemie-family, remember: asking questions, seeking care early, and surrounding yourself with a trusted health team and community makes a difference.

As the colder months arrive, respiratory illnesses like influenza, pneumonia, and RSV become more common. Vaccination remains one of the best ways to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community from serious illness.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), staying up to date on recommended vaccines helps reduce your risk of severe respiratory infections and hospitalizations. Common vaccines that help protect your lungs include those for the flu, pneumonia, and RSV.

At PCHS, we encourage everyone to take charge of their health this season by talking with a healthcare provider about which vaccines are right for them. A quick conversation can go a long way toward keeping you healthy and active through the winter months.

November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, a time to shed light on a disease that is often difficult to detect in its early stages. Increasing awareness can help more people recognize possible warning signs and seek medical guidance sooner.

Common symptoms may include jaundice, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue. While these signs can be linked to many conditions, it’s important to talk with a healthcare provider if they persist or cause concern.

At PCHS, we encourage our community to stay informed and proactive about their health. To learn more about pancreatic cancer and available resources, visit https://www.cancer.org/cancer/types/pancreatic-cancer/about/what-is-pancreatic-cancer.html

As the weather cools down, it’s the perfect time to bring warm, nourishing soups into your weekly rotation. Soup can be more than just comfort food, it’s a great way to get in vegetables, protein, fiber, and hydration all in one bowl. Here are a few types of healthy, hearty soups to try this season:

-Vegetable-Based Soups
-Legume-Rich Soups
-Lean Protein Soups
-Blended Vegetable Soups

Skip the heavy creams and sodium-heavy bases by using homemade stocks or low-sodium options, and finish with fresh herbs, a drizzle of olive oil, or a sprinkle of seeds for texture. Comment your go-to soup for when the temperature drops?

Today is World Pneumonia Day, a time to raise awareness about a serious, yet often preventable, lung infection that affects people of all ages worldwide.

According to the American Lung Association, pneumonia can range from mild to life-threatening and is most dangerous for young children, adults 65 and older, and those with underlying health conditions. The good news is that many cases can be prevented through vaccination, healthy lifestyle choices, and early medical care.

If you or a loved one develop symptoms like persistent cough, fever, shortness of breath, or chest pain, don’t wait to seek medical attention. And if you’re eligible, talk with your healthcare provider about vaccines that can help prevent pneumonia and other respiratory infections.

Let’s continue to protect our lungs and support community health because every breath truly matters.

Managing diabetes is about more than numbers, it’s about daily habits, balance, and support. Regular checkups, staying active, taking medications as prescribed, and choosing nutritious foods all play a role in keeping blood sugar levels steady and preventing complications.

The CDC highlights that small, consistent actions like being active, eating balanced meals, and monitoring your health can make living with diabetes more manageable. Support from healthcare teams, family, and friends can also make a meaningful difference.

Living well with diabetes means staying informed, connected, and proactive about your health.

Knowing your risk is the first step in prevention. According to the CDC, you may be at higher risk for type 2 diabetes if you are age 45 or older, have a family history of diabetes, are overweight or physically inactive, or have ever had gestational diabetes.

Talk with your healthcare provider about screening, especially if you have one or more of these risk factors.
