Meet Thomas, a dedicated fitness member at our Hartville, Ohio center who turned his goal into a grand adventure. Thomas aimed to visit all 423 national parks in one year, and he did just that!

Physical Therapist Jeffery Reale found a map and marked each park Thomas visited with a pin so the team could follow along his journey. Throughout his national park voyage, Thomas would stop by the center and share his incredible experiences.

We are so proud of Thomas for reaching this outstanding goal. In fact, we designated November 22nd Thomas Wright Day at NovaCare Hartville. Read more about his journey in the link below.

Thomas Wright of Hartville visited all 425 national parks in the U.S. in a single year.

An amputation not only makes a significant impact on our patients, but on their loved ones as well.

Andrea Pavlik has been sharing her emotional journey following a below-the-knee amputation after a lifelong battle with a rare bone disease. Andrea is a center manager and orthotist with NovaCare Prosthetics & Orthotics. She’s also a mom.

“Deciding to amputate is no easy task, especially when you have children at home,” Andrea said. “It impacts all facets of your family life.”

Andrea said her family completely supported her and took the time to prepare. “We talked about the process, what I would need help with and how much help I would need immediately post-surgery and in the coming months,” she said.

It can be challenging for adults, let alone children. “My biggest concern was getting my child to understand what was about to happen,” Andrea shared. “My best word of advice is to contact their school. I talked with her teacher, principal and guidance counselor about what would happen. I found two children’s books on amputation and “being different” that the school used in her class to help her friends understand what she was going through, too. The children rallied around her and supported her just as much as our support system at home. It was a true blessing.”

That preparation led Andrea and her daughter to the moment they had long awaited. “Each night when my daughter was younger, we would take a walk down the driveway after dinner and talk about our day; over the last two years, I stopped doing that due to pain,” she said. “Not anymore. This is my motivation. Be still my mom heart! We are walking the driveway again (and she was pretty excited, too).”

We’re honored to share Andrea’s story and let other patients know they’re in good company.

Getting back to your life after an amputation can be exciting and scary at the same time.

NovaCare Prosthetics & Orthotics Center Manager and Orthotist Andrea Pavlik discusses returning to hobbies after her life-changing below-the-knee amputation.

Andrea has been an avid hunter and archer for 18 years. “I found target practice to be very grounding and satisfying as well as a great way to relieve stress,” she said. But extreme pain in her left ankle from a rare bone disease put her hobby on hold.

“I was not able to walk into the woods to hunt anymore for the past five to six years,” Andrea said. “Even walking in our own woods to our range was hard, so I gave up most of it.”

Post-amputation, Andrea says she’s now able to return to the things she loves - archery and traveling.

“I have always believed in the ‘if there’s a will, there’s a way’ philosophy. I am still using it as a new amputee. Pain is no longer a deciding factor for me; now, it is endurance and stamina," Andrea shared. "I have a long way to go in my recovery, but I encourage any new amputee not to shy away from your interests. You should work with your prosthetist and be honest with them about what you want to be able to do and how it feels when you start to do it. Don’t be afraid to try things again; it’s scary, but you will never do it if you don’t try.”

Be sure to check back and follow Andrea’s inspirational journey each week.

Osteoarthritis hit Bertha Galindo hard, affecting both of her knees. At 73-years-old, Bertha worked and enjoyed taking care of grandchildren, traveling, dancing and spending time with friends. But the condition caused her to have pain, discomfort and feel unsafe while walking, often forcing her to find places to sit. Finally, Bertha had enough and scheduled surgery. She opted for a total knee replacement, starting with the left knee followed by the right knee three months later.

For the physical therapy needed for both surgeries, a friend highly recommended our center. Bertha has been extremely grateful and happy with her care. "I am doing very well and feeling much better both physically and mentally," she said. "I can't wait to go out and feel comfortable."

Keep working hard and making progress, Bertha, you're doing great! Thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.

Andrea Pavlik isn’t smiling in her picture. She’s crying, overwhelmed with a wealth of emotions as she stands on her new prosthetic leg for the first time.

Andrea is an orthotist and center manager with NovaCare Prosthetics & Orthotics. She decided to share the journey of her below-the-knee amputation so other patients know they’re not alone. This week, she’s opening up about this intense moment. Here’s what Andrea had to say:

“That first stand… Who would have thought it would come with so many emotions? Joy, fear, anxiety, relief and concern all roped into one moment. I was relieved that the moment was finally here. It meant the first step to getting back on my two feet again (pun intended). I was scared that it would hurt too much for me to tolerate it. Was there discomfort? Yes. But being upright and letting go of crutches and parallel bars was a feeling like no other, bringing tears to my eyes. It was a sense of accomplishment and affirmation that the decision I made was the right one for me.

"Physically, there was discomfort in my residual leg, mostly from not having stood on it for a few months and needing to continue to desensitize the skin. But it was not the pain that I was used to feeling from my leg before my amputation. I never had balance to my left side, so the fact that I could now shift weight fully to the left was very odd to me.

"Before we got to this point, I had spent several weeks wearing a “shrinker” to help shape my leg and reduce the edema. I also spent a lot of time massaging the leg and desensitizing it by touching it with different textures. My daughter loves to massage it for me, which has helped tremendously. It has helped reduce nerve sensations and made it less sensitive to touch and pressure.

"This was a great day! If you are gearing up for your first day, don’t be afraid. Take a deep breath and know that this is the start of even better things to come. Take that step forward. I'm stepping along with you.”

In case you missed it, check out our first two videos with Andrea in our feed and come back to check in on her journey each week.

Craig Morgan is a prostate cancer survivor.

Every year, Craig says he would take a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test to screen for prostate cancer. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough. "Fast forward a few years, and I am diagnosed with stage three prostate cancer," he said. "The decision was agreed upon for the removal of the prostate."

Craig's surgeon recommended pre-surgery physical therapy. Craig turned to Physical Therapist Mark Smith and participated in our CoreVia Pelvic Health and ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation programs. "I have been totally happy with Mark. He takes a hands-on approach and has the experience to aid in your healing process," he said. "I truly believe physical therapy before surgery aided me in regaining my continence and aided in the healing process."

Craig had this advice for other men: "Be proactive. Make sure your prostate is healthy. Talk to your doctor about it and get examined every year. In the end, you will be glad you did. Much better to find out and treat now than go through an experience of surgery. And if you do have to go through some sort of treatment or surgery, be involved, ask questions and do the physical therapy before and after surgery with a qualified therapist. It will aid your recovery and help you get back to a normal lifestyle again. Good luck, and stay safe."

We're honored to play a role in your recovery journey, Craig.

NovaCare employees recently enjoyed a night out at Lincoln Financial Field. 🏈 Team members took tours of the stadium and had up-close encounters with the Lombardi trophy, last year's NFC championship trophy, and ring. Special thanks to Brandon Graham, #55, who made the night even more memorable by greeting our team and taking photos. A fantastic and fun employee experience for all!

There’s no place like home for the holidays. Center Manager and Physical Therapist Kevin Capata has advice for everyone who may be stuck on a cramped flight this holiday travel season.

While on the plane: ✈️
✔️ If you aren’t sleeping, eating, reading a book or watching a movie, get up. Walk, stand, stretch and chat with the flight attendants or fellow passengers.
✔️ Wear comfortable and stretchable clothes - no one cares what you look like when traveling. :-) Compression socks are highly recommended.
✔️ If you plan to sleep, pack earplugs and an eye mask and do what you need to set yourself up for success.

Of course, always follow directions from the flight crew and ensure you’re only getting up and moving when allowed.

After you get off the plane: 🧳
✔️ Stretch! Do whatever feels good and get your body into different shapes besides sitting in a chair.
✔️ Elevate your legs. Take 10-20 minutes lying on the ground with your legs elevated on a chair, wall, etc.
✨ Bonus: Exercise. Whether you walk, run or hit the gym, get your heart rate up and blood moving.

There are plenty of options to move your body while traveling to stay happy and healthy and enjoy the holidays.

"K" was diagnosed with prostate cancer several years ago. Before surgery, "K" said he was an active and otherwise healthy 69-year-old. Then, following his prostatectomy in late 2021, "K" began experiencing urinary incontinence.

"I enjoy outside activities, particularly sailboat racing and traveling," he shared. "Incontinence limited these activities and, at times, forced me to avoid them. I needed to wear depends at all times, including at bedtime."

"K" said he tried physical therapy with other companies but was never able to fully regain his bladder control. Then, he came Physical Therapist Jill Cramp to participate in our CoreVia Pelvic Health program.

"Jill was remarkable," he said. "[She] had a broad knowledge of pelvic floor PT and was able to draw on this research and her experiences to suggest a variety of approaches. Jill's diagnosis and treatment have included the use of ultrasound imaging, which I have found extremely beneficial and enlightening. She constantly had new therapies and approaches to try. Her new approaches generated favorable results, but more importantly, encouraged me to keep moving forward with my recovery."

We're so happy to see your continued success, "K."

We know this can be a sensitive topic for many, but it's important for patients to know they're not alone. Our compassionate and dedicated CoreVia Pelvic Health therapists complete specialized training and ongoing education to help patients return to their lives.

Ahead of Veterans Day tomorrow, we're honored to spotlight one of our veteran patients and present him with a challenge coin.

Louis VanHorn recently visited our NovaCare Prosthetics & Orthotics center in Southfield, MI, for a replacement socket. Mr. VanHorn is a veteran of the U.S. Army and wanted our technician, Luke, to laminate his socket with the Army logo. During his appointment, his prosthetist, Katy, presented him with a NovaCare military challenge coin.

Challenge coins are used within the Armed Forces to recognize and honor individuals for their hard work and successes. This military tradition allows us to honor veterans in our centers and show appreciation for them and all they have done. Their dedication and service to our country is a debt that can never be repaid but can forever be praised and recognized.

Thank you for your service, Mr. VanHorn. We're honored to be your partner for life.

Pain comes in many forms. Back pain is awful, but it's nothing compared to the pain of losing a loved one to opioid addiction.

According to the American Medical Association, an estimated 3% to 19% of people who take prescription pain medications become addicted to them.

Our latest blog post talks about the two types of pain that contribute to the use of prescription opioids and how physical therapy could be the safe, pill-free answer many are looking for. Plus, we discuss the surprising journey of opioids in the health care system, including the time a popular pharmaceutical company marketed he**in as a non-addictive over-the-counter medication.

Read the blog, and be sure to like and share this post to spread awareness about opioid-free pain alternatives.

The opioid epidemic in the United States is a public health crisis that has left a trail of devastation in its wake.
