“Many of our parents will say it feels like falling off a cliff so we try to reduce supports as they get older so that it doesn't feel that way.”

Thanks to WESA for including us in this important discussion about the challenges that families face when their children with autism age out of school.

This story features our Associate Chief School Administrator Kristen Stackiewicz, and our Educational Supervisor Maggie McMahon.

Amid swelling political rhetoric that frames autism as a tragedy, some families are urging lawmakers to focus instead on improving supportive services for their kids. A family in Irwin says caricatures of people with autism capturing the headlines don’t show the full picture.

We are truly grateful for every person in our community who chose to give, share, and champion our mission this year. Your kindness transforms families, lifts up futures, and reminds us that we're not doing this work alone.

Thank you for believing in our kids, standing with their families, and helping us shape brighter futures together.

And a special thanks to DBR & CO and an anonymous donor for each matching $5k in donations. Your generosity is life-changing.

Important Partnership News 🤝 The Children's Institute and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania have teamed up on a new, transformative program supporting at-risk teens across five club locations in Allegheny County.

Thanks to a 3-year grant from the PA Commission on Crime and Delinquency's Great Futures Violence Prevention Program, we'll be able to offer mental health counseling and support to more than 100 teens each year from communities most impacted by violence.

As Bethany Douglas, our vice president for Children and Family Services, shared:
“Our new program will enable at-risk teens to think more about their mental health and feel comfortable talking to adults without a fear of judgment or criticism. Through the program, we can not only improve skills and make teens more aware of support and available crisis interventions, but we can also identify teens who could benefit from other levels of behavioral health support or psychiatric services."

We’re grateful for this partnership and for the chance to help even more teens in our community navigate a stage of life that can feel especially heavy.
