Our APTA Acute Care Residency Spotlight continues! 🌟 This week, we’re highlighting the University of Utah!

University of Utah Acute Care Physical Therapy Residency Program continues to prepare clinicians to lead, collaborate, and elevate patient care across diverse practice settings. Current residents and recent graduates share how the program has shaped their clinical growth and professional identity.

Current resident Marta Cholewa reflects on the impact of the residency early in her training, noting significant growth in patient handling, critical thinking, and evidence-based intervention selection across diverse acute care populations. She highlights the value of learning what can’t be taught in a textbook—developing efficiency in fast-paced environments, understanding the importance of work culture, advocating for the profession, and building strong interdisciplinary collaboration.

Recent graduate Hannah Schauss describes the residency as a transformative experience for both her career and her patients. She credits the program’s strong emphasis on early mobility in the ICU with sharpening her clinical reasoning, strengthening interdisciplinary relationships, and fostering a mindset of continuous improvement. These skills have carried forward into her current role in a more rural hospital system, where she has helped further develop early mobility practices.
