Today we honor African-American History Month by highlighting the achievements of William Goldwyn Nunn Jr. (aka Bill Nunn, Sr.) who was just elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.
Nunn was a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers organization for 46 years. During that tenure, he focused his efforts on recruiting players from historically African-American colleges and universities. Nunn has been elected to the Hall of Fame in the “Contributors” category, which is open to eligible individuals such as commissioners, owners, general managers, and other executives. This achievement is made even more notable by the fact that Nunn is “the first predominant scout to make the Hall of Fame — and the first African-American front-office executive” (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, 02/07/21). The Pro Football Hall of Fame will host an induction ceremony in August 2021.
The man who made a difference in the lives of so many is buried in Section 12 at The Homewood Cemetery, and is included on our self-guided tour, “Talent & Tenacity: Artists, Entertainers, & Sports Stars”. To access this tour, please visit www.thehomewoodcemetery.com, and scroll to the bottom of the page for the “Download Our App” option.
We congratulate the family of Mr. Nunn, and are grateful for all of his contributions to our Pittsburgh Steelers throughout his nearly half-century of service.

Show us your Veterans! In honor of Memorial Day, we’d love to see photos of the Veterans in your family. Post photos, stories or simply your loved one’s name in the comments to honor their memory and their service. We welcome photos of any Veteran, but if your family member is located in The Homewood Cemetery, please let us know!
The Homewood Cemetery is proud to be the final resting place of thousands of United States Veterans, and has been honoring them since our founding in 1878.

In order to legally comply with current state-mandated guidelines, which prohibit large gatherings of people, we will not be permitted to invite the public to this year’s Memorial Day service at The Homewood Cemetery. We are disappointed, but must comply with local, state and federal guidance. The Homewood Cemetery will observe the sacred passing of Memorial Day privately, to the extent we are legally able, and we will update our plans accordingly if local and state mandates are relaxed.
We encourage each of you to reflect on the sacrifices so many Americans have made for the cause of liberty as we recommit ourselves to remembering the fallen on Memorial Day and every day. Thank you for your understanding during this challenging time.
