March is Self-Injury Awareness Month 🧡
Self-injury, also known as non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), is the act of deliberately harming one’s own body as a way to cope with emotional distress. It is not a su***de attempt but rather a way of managing overwhelming feelings.
🔸 Risk Factors
• Abuse & trauma
• Attachment wounds & difficulties
• Bullying victimization or perpetration
• History of self-injury
• Suicidal thoughts or behaviors
• Personality disorders
• Psychiatric conditions (Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Eating Disorders, Emotional Dysregulation)
🔸 Why Does It Happen?
Self-injury serves different functions for different people, including:
✔️ Emotional regulation
✔️ Expressing psychological distress
✔️ Coping with trauma & PTSD
✔️ A sense of control in powerlessness
✔️ Self-punishment & internalized stigma
✔️ A way of seeking help when words fail
🔸 Signs to Look Out For
• Scars, fresh cuts, bruises, or burns
• Wearing long sleeves/pants even in hot weather
• Talking about feeling helpless or worthless
• Keeping sharp objects on hand
If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. Self-injury can be a sign of deep emotional pain, but healing is possible. Therapy, support, and healthier coping strategies can make a difference. You’re not alone—reach out. 🤍
