We thought we'd wrap up this with something that's surprising to nearly everyone. Sometimes fire departments or hospitals have certified technicians, but quite often they do not. Make sure you're meeting with an up-to-date CPST by checking the Safe Kids website or sending us a message!

Many caregivers aren't sure when to transition their child to the next type of seat. Often, they look to state laws for guidance. However, laws can take years to change and most are long outdated. Instead, these best practice guidelines are the gold standard for safety. Give your kids the maximal amount of protection on every ride!

We know that kids are generally messy and car seats can get really gross over time. Unfortunately most cleaning products can damage your seat. The good news is that most seat covers can be removed and washed. Just make sure you check your manual for specific guidelines before you start!

Usually, children under the age of 2 can fly as "lap babies", but most caregivers don't know that we recommend that you always buy your child a ticket and use their car seat on board. It's the safest way for your child - and their seat - to travel! Note that boosters cannot be used on planes, but you can pack small ones in your carryon!

This comes as a very unwelcome surprise to many caregivers, but not all seats are compatible with all vehicles, or with all seating positions within a vehicle. The position of vehicle head restraints and seat belts, the size and shape of vehicle seats, and the size and shape of different car seats can make installation difficult or even impossible in some situations. Trying to fit three seats across a row makes this even more complicated! If you can, try a seat before you buy it, check trusted reviews from organizations like csftl.org and car-seat.org, and check with a local CPST if you're having an issue!

First up, less expensive seats are not less safe than more expensive seats. All seats meet rigorous safety standards and will protect your child in a crash. What's most important is that the seat is installed and used correctly, which may or may not be easier to do with extra features on a more expensive seat. The best seat for you is the one that fits your child, your vehicle, and your *budget* and can be installed and used correctly every time!
Note: Beware of counterfeit seats, as they do NOT meat safety standards!

The Cosco Rise, Graco RightGuide, and Bubble Bum are all compact, narrow, and lightweight -and- they have attached shoulder belt guides! The RideSafer Travel Vest is as narrow as it gets, while still providing a safe fit! These restraints each have different weight and height ranges, so double check before choosing one for your child.

Someone said: My kid is way too big to rear-face; their legs would be crushed!

Fact Check: Best practice guidelines say to rear-face until the limits on your convertible, and as close to age 4 as possible. There are many seats available now which RF to 50 lbs, and nearly all convertibles and multimode seats RF to 40 lbs, which will get most kids to age 4. Kids are flexible - they don't get stiff and cramped like adults - and RF actually lowers the risk of leg injury in a crash. Plus, when they're RF, they can't see your front seat snacks! 🍬🍫🍩
