We are committed to continuously improve the mobility and function of people with disabilities through advanced engineering in clinical research and medical rehabilitation. The Human Engineering Research Laboratories (HERL) is a collaboration between the University of Pittsburgh, the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, and UPMC Health System. HERL is dedicated to wheelchair and mobility research, spe

cifically by improving the mobility and function of people with disabilities through advanced engineering in clinical research and medical rehabilitation. HERL also studies athletics in rehabilitation, assistive living spaces, the efficiency of wheelchair transfers, clinician training, and force and vibration on wheelchair users.

⚡2025 marks the start of a new era for para-athletes in the USA 🇺🇸
14 athletes, 5 events, 40 spectators - this year's Keystone Games hosted at the Human Engineering Research Laboratories kickstarted a series of annual adaptive sports championships to be held every winter, right here in

Congratulations to all the athletes that came out to compete this year!
Thanks to the immense acclaim and success of this inaugural competition, we are already working toward doubling the size of our tournament for next year.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy visited HERL on Thursday 2/6 to learn about the critical work we do in the field of .

HERL has welcomed incoming National Defense University Eisenhower School students in this annual tradition for over a decade now, and every class brings along its own curiosities and excitement to our home.

🌎 Global impact 🗺️
The Human Engineering Research Laboratories were awarded a small 🇺🇸 State Department grant to develop a version of our 🚍 Transportation Education Board Game relevant to people with and without disabilities in Timor-Leste.

Aliança Fernandes and JDN Timor-Leste have been working with us on this project for the past year, which started as part of a Department of Transportation venture, later receiving follow-up funding from the Paralyzed Veterans of America Education Foundation and growing with NIDILRR RERC funding to initiate .

This tool is being used for research and education involving OT students at University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences , Chatham University , and Duquesne University.
