On clergy day, we want to appreciate all of our chaplains: Jim, Wayne, and Dana. Thank you for the spiritual support you offer our patients and their families.
To give an idea of what a hospice chaplain does, meet Dana.
Hi I’m Dana Motte. I am a chaplain with Gateway Hospice in
Washington and the surrounding areas. I have been with Gateway for
just over a year now. I learned about Gateway from a member of the
Gateway team who consistently raved about what a fantastic company
it is to work for. I was drawn by their commitment to caring for the
whole person. Their philosophy is, “We treat the whole person–mind,
body, and spirit–not just the disease.”
I begin each day with a time for personal prayer and devotions.
My daily service plan includes personal visits with our patients and
often their families. I travel to ten different medical facilities, but also
visit a number of patients in their homes. During most visits, I spend
time listening to people’s thoughts and emotions as they navigate their
hospice journey. I also offer prayer, Scripture readings, devotional
reflections, the Lord’s Supper, and music — whichever brings comfort
and peace to my patients. Throughout the month, I lead various
church services and Bible studies in the facilities I visit.
I love my job as a chaplain at Gateway Hospice. I love people,
and I get to meet so many of them. Every day is different, but I find
that exciting. There are so many opportunities to serve our clients and
their families. My short-term goal is to take mandolin lessons so that I
can provide live music for my patients and their families during visits.
