I’m sure you’ve heard the news that SNAP benefits are in danger during our recent government shutdown. At Family Resources, close to 90% of the children we serve receive these benefits.

We at Family Resources believe that no child in our country, one of the richest in the world, should ever go hungry.

As an agency we have invested our own money, relayed resources that are available, helped families we serve to navigate these resources, (which can be tricky) and will continue to do so.

But we need your help. As our neighbor, our donor, and a fellow human, please find it in your resources to donate whatever you can so that children and families will not go hungry in this unforeseen time. We have received an amazing $2,825 in the last week, let’s keep it going!

Your donation will go directly towards the purchase of sustainable food and grocery store gift cards.

Today we would like to highlight our last two BJWL locations for the month of September, Meyer’s Ridge and Pleasant Ridge!

Both locations have longstanding ties to the McKees Rocks Community and provide a safe, nurturing out of school time program for its residents.

At Meyer’s Ridge Supervisor Shayla has been with the program since 2018, and Youth Worker LaToya has been with the program off and on since 2015.

Our program, Fresh Market at Meyers Ridge, is made possible through a partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. We are able provide fresh produce for the community (35-40 households), two times per month, including items such as potatoes, apples, carrots, and more. Please come and join us if you live in the community!

At Pleasant Ridge, Supervisor Na’keya has been with the program since 2017 and has been a dedicated team member since. Youth Workers T’Kaia and Siquoia have been with BJWL since 2024 and have been great additions to the team.

Often, going above and beyond for the families she works with, Na’keya recently helped create a Dance Team within the Pleasant Ridge Community, allowing the children to showcase their talents, while exercising and having fun.

Welcome to BJWL location at Groveton Village! Supervisor Naveta has been with the agency since 2018, and Youth Worker Dominic has been with BJWL since 2019. He enjoys working with the children and overseeing the cooking program, “Master Chef”. Youth Worker Jordan has been with BJWL since 2017 and is a gifted and creative artist who often teaches unique art projects at the site. Located in a cul-de-sac in Coraopolis, this program is small but mighty!

We partner with Beverly's PGH for monthly birthday parties; 412 Food Program which provides bulk food items to families; Hometown Hoops, a summer basketball clinic that teaches kids the fundamentals of basketball; the Children’s Windows to Africa Program; and The Allegheny County Parks facilitated sessions on snakes and bugs.

If you’re interested in enrolling your child, please contact the site at: 412-329-7249.

Welcome to BJWL Prospect Terrace, located in East Pittsburgh! Having been embedded in the community for over 20 years, utilizing two housing units for our programming, we help bring resources to the families in the community. Supervisor Sharon has been with the program since 2017; Long-standing employee Theresa, who has worked at multiple sites, has been with BJWL since 2004; and Youth Worker Toya has been with BJWL since 2019.

With transportation often a barrier for the community, partnering with programs including Tickets for Kids, Shop Fresh, a program through the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank that offers various supplemental items for the community, as well exposing our children to off-site experiences, is essential. Over the summer, programming also included Hometown Hoops, a summer basketball clinic that teaches kids the fundamentals of basketball; Racial Equity Fellows from the Department of Human Services facilitated sessions on mental health and wellness Children’s Windows to Africa https://cwtapgh.org/, which is an African Centered program focused on storytelling, craftmaking, and history; The Allegheny County Parks facilitated sessions on how animals adapt to various environments and the life of insects.

If you’re interested in enrolling your child, please contact the site at: 412-824-1555.

Brian Tessmer, Director of Treatment and Operations at Family Resources, weighs in.

Family Resources has been in the business of keeping kids safe after school for over 35 years!

As school starts, many parents face the decision of letting their children stay home alone after school.

Meet our dedicated BJWL East Hills staff! Supervisor Blanche has been with the BJWL Team since 2018; Youth Worker Terica has been with the BJWL program since 2004; and Youth Worker Lindsey has been with the program since 2022. We are so lucky to have such a dedicated team working with our youth.

This summer, the children and staff at East Hills had so much fun engaging with various community partners. Racial Equity Fellows from the Department of Human Services facilitated sessions on mental health and wellness; A City in the Streets event was held; STEM projects were completed; The kids (and staff) learned about fireflies and owls, up close, through Allegheny Parks; and children participated in the Children’s Windows to Africa Program, which is an African Centered program focused on storytelling, craftmaking, and history.

We continue this work all school year, inspiring learning, keeping children safe and promoting well-being through social and emotional learning.

If you’re interested in enrolling your children, please contact the site at: 412-727-7756.

Our Story

Our mission is to prevent and treat child abuse by strengthening families. Everything we do is focused on creating a better future for our children. We provide families and neighborhoods the tools they need to keep children safe, prevent abuse, manage conflict, and support the changing needs of families.

Envisioning and achieving a better future for children requires a compassionate, trauma-informed approach to strengthening families. Our resources, tools, and programs focus on prevention, intervention, and treatment at 19 locations across the Greater Pittsburgh Area. Here, we are able to provide the right services, at the right time, for the families we serve.

Our culture at Family Resources is marked by our trauma-informed approach to providing care. We understand the impact of exposure to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), which are traumatic experiences in a person’s life occurring before the age of 18. We know how important the prevention of, and healing from, these experiences are for strengthening families - studies have shown that as the number of ACEs a child experiences increases, so does the likelihood of health problems later in life. Trauma-informed care provides us with the right culture and tools to address the critical needs of out clients.
