Eight Years ago I had the honor or of meeting Dr. Derrick Lonsdale, the world's expert on Vitamin B1 (Thiamine). I recently heard of his passing. Here are some of my thoughts and memories on his life, his research and his legacy... one of which I praise God contributed to my own daughter's health improvements.
May you rest in peace, Dr. Lonsdale, until we meet again.

Last month, I was helping a client, as I researched a medical concern they were having, I was reminded of Dr. Derrick Lonsdale’s work on thiamine. I was first made aware of his work by an astute geneticist in Arkansas and which has had profound effects on our own family’s health (you can learn m...

Pandas/Pans awareness…
“PANDAS/PANS is a distinct example of the gap between mental and physical health care in our medical system. Doctors and medical professionals are often focused on one or the other, and when patients fall somewhere in the middle, they fall into this gap, where treatment and understanding can’t reach them. “

The MSRGN’s Genetic Ambassador group designed a survey for families which was shared in January 2021 and collected responses until March of 2021. This survey asked families (whose child went on to get a genetic diagnosis) about the “red flags” or symptoms, warning signs, or details that concer...

Moms know their children... (biological, foster, adopted, or otherwise!)

"I do not think Hereford County Hospital did any investigation into the physical causes of her illness," she said.

"I believe that was due to her being a looked-after child they labelled as anxious and having mental health problems even though she had never displayed these problems before. I feel she was completely let down by the local authority, social workers, GPs, and A&E, who told me there was nothing physically wrong with her.”

How I became Empowered

Where did the journey to Empowered Medical Advocacy begin? That is a hard question to answer. It could have been the day I wrote a term paper in 7th grade on Autism, or maybe it was when I entered a PhD program in Chemistry only to realize I was severely chemically sensitive and the lab would not be the place I would thrive. Or it could have been the day I became a mom and experienced the amazing yet sometimes overwhelming gift of motherhood. With that new job title, mother, my education into the medical field sped fast forward when my sweet baby girl was born and began having developmental and health issues in the first few months of life. It was then I realized I knew my child best and that I was her best advocate. As our family struggled to get answers, to understand what was going on inside her tiny body, we were led to a better understanding of both the internal (biochemical) and external (medical) “systems” and how to navigate our way through them. As she healed and recovered, I had a desire to pay it forward and help others. I opened Empowered Medical Advocacy in 2016 with the model of the type of advocate that I wish I had walking beside me, in the early days of my daughter’s medical journey. We are here to help.

Let us know how we can walk beside you and help you navigate this journey!
