November is American Diabetes Month.
The United States is also officially beginning a long holiday season full of delicious foods.
People with diabetes could use a little help from you. 1 in 10 people have diabetes, but you may not know they have diabetes.
Do these 6 things to help your holiday quests with diabetes:
✔️Gather safely. People with diabetes are more likely to die if they get covid-19
✔️Serve some low carbohydrate foods so that it is possible for people with diabetes to eat well without raising their blood sugar too much.
✔️Have some heart healthy options (good for everyone). People with diabetes are two times more likely to die from heart disease. And heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US so it helps everyone.
✔️Take a walk after eating - Walking lowers blood sugar and is good for everyone
✔️Support everyone’s food choices - Don’t push people to eat. You never know why they are trying to resist your delicious food
✔️Dessert - offer small servings of dessert or unsweetened fruit which is usually lower in carbohydrate than dessert. It’s nice for people to have options.
Low carbohydrate foods include
Nonstarchy vegetables: asparagus, broccoli, beets, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, celery cucumber, eggplant, fennel, greens (lettuce - all kinds), kale, leeks, mushrooms, Okra, onion, peppers, radishes, spinach, summer squash, zucchini, sugar snap peas, swiss chard, tomatoes, unsweetened tomato sauce, and turnips
Most protein foods like meats, cheeses, eggs and nuts
Give thanks by being supportive of those who live with diabetes every day.
