We’re so proud of our very own Amy DeLuce, Assistant Director & Program Specialist at HDS, who was a special guest panelist at the ReelAbilities Pittsburgh premiere of Deaf last Saturday, September 6, at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. 🎬✨

Amy brought her expertise, passion, and advocacy to the discussion, sharing insights on accessibility, inclusion, and empowering individuals who are Deaf and have intellectual disabilities. For over a decade, Amy has been breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for individuals to thrive in their communities - and this panel was a perfect reflection of her impact.

We’re grateful for Amy’s leadership and proud to see her representing HDS and the communities we serve! 💙

🎬 Join us for an unforgettable evening at the Pittsburgh Playhouse! 🌟

📅 Saturday, September 6
🕖 7:00 PM
📍 Pittsburgh Playhouse

We’re proud to co-sponsor with Achieva the Pittsburgh premiere of Deaf - an award-winning feature film by director Eva Libertad.

✨ Deaf follows Angela, a deaf woman navigating the joys and challenges of motherhood, marriage, and family in a world not built for her. Rooted in real-life experiences and featuring authentic storytelling, this film has captured audiences worldwide - winning the Panorama Audience Award at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival and the Grand Jury Prize at the 2025 Seattle International Film Festival.

Followed by a panel discussion diving deeper into the themes of the film.

The evening also features the presentation of the 7th Annual Richard Meritzer Award to Nancy Murray, honoring a legacy of accessibility and inclusion.

September is National Deaf Awareness Month 💜

First recognized in the late 1950s, National Deaf Awareness Month was created to celebrate the culture, heritage, language, and contributions of the Deaf community - while also raising awareness about the barriers Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals face every day.

For over 100 years, HDS has worked to bridge communication gaps, advance accessibility, and empower individuals across Southwestern Pennsylvania. From interpreting services and advocacy to community education and outreach, our work is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves to be heard.

This September, we invite you to learn, connect, and take action:
-Explore Deaf culture and history
-Advocate for accessibility and inclusion
-Support local Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities
