Today is World Human Milk Donation Day! Thank you to the Mid-Atlantic Mothers' Milk Bank and its milk donors for providing human milk to the most medically fragile babies.

Human milk is more than just nutrition; it is a life-saving clinical intervention, especially for our most vulnerable preterm infants. On this International Human Milk Donation Day, ILCA® celebrates the selfless donors and the regulated milk banks that ensure equitable access to this vital resource.

Why Human Milk Matters
🔹 Clinical Gold Standard: For infants in the NICU, expressed milk from a donor can significantly reduce the risk of severe complications.
🔹 The IBCLC® Advantage: An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant® (IBCLC®) is essential in helping mother-infant dyads or lactating parents establish their own supply while navigating the donation process.
🔹 Equity in Care: We advocate for systems where human milk is available to every infant based on medical need, not socioeconomic status.

Advocate with Us!
Are you a donor or a healthcare professional? Share this post to help us myth-bust the barriers to donation and promote the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes.

IBCLC Jill Wilson is enjoying vacation this week. This happened while doing a horseback tour in Progresso. Her horse Reign, had a two month old nursling on hand. This little guy did not care that his mom was “working”. Any chance he got, he would go in for some milk! Looks like this was the perfect horse/rider combo.

May is Preeclampsia Awareness Month. While this condition occurs during pregnancy, it can affect breastfeeding post delivery. This is because, intravenous magnesium, which is a treatment for Preeclampsia can make both parent and baby very sleepy. This can delay both the initial skin to skin period and baby’s first feeding. It is crucial that these dyads receive lactation support as soon as they can.

Join us this May as we honor Preeclampsia Awareness Month, a month-long communication campaign to raise awareness of this life-threatening hypertensive disorder of pregnancy.

High blood pressure can happen to any woman in any pregnancy or the postpartum period. It is a leading cause of maternal and infant illness and death worldwide.

Join the Preeclampsia Foundation as they educate, empower, and inspire women to take charge of their pregnancy health and "know the symptoms" of preeclampsia. 🔗 https://www.preeclampsia.org/awarenessmonth
