An interesting article that discusses how the formula shortage in 2022 impacted breastfeeding support in Mississippi. During that time, the BFC fielded many calls from parents who wanted to relactate or increase their supply to reduce their formula use. Did the shortage impact your feeding choices? Did you decide to breastfeed due to the shortage? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.

This is great news for working families in Pennsylvania.

This is great news for working families in Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania House just passed The Family Care Act (HB 200) which would allow eligible employees in Pennsylvania access to 12 weeks of paid leave following the birth of a child or serious illness.

Millions of Pennsylvanians, including tens of thousands of healthcare workers — a profession of almost 90% women — still lack real access to paid or protected family leave.

Legislating paid leave not only supports this important workforce's ability to show up and serve their community every day, but we believe it will have a real impact on the health and well-being of families across the Commonwealth.

We applaud the house for their efforts and urge the senate to follow their lead and work together across parties to make paid parental leave a reality for every family in PA.

How about some controversy for this Wednesday morning? A recent article written by, Dr. Melissa Bartick, suggests that promoting pumping and encouraging parents to " human-milk feed" actually undermines breastfeeding and the rights of parents and babies. Our stance at the BFC is that we support any person's infant feeding decision whether that's at the exclusively at the breast, via pumped milk or a combination feeding plan. The whole article is below. Let us know your thoughts!

Last week, we shared a post about the new lactation rooms at the Pittsburgh International Airport. In the rooms are some very special artwork of nursing mammals done by artist, Ashley Cecil. Ashely reached out to us and shared more information on how she was inspired for this wonderful collection.

"The mammal family portraits were inspired by Ashley’s 2016 artist residency at Pittsburgh’s beloved Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The paintings of nursing mammals were modeled after dioramas in the museum’s Hall of Wildlife. Deciding which species to include was determined by a public poll. Over 100 votes were cast, resulting in this list of favorites. Ashley combined the paintings to create a contemporary twist on a toile wallpaper, which is installed in the museum’s award-winning breast-feeding room."

You can find more of her amazing work at her website and her social media accounts.
