Aware Self Care Therapeutics Massage and Massage Cupping Therapy with Genevieve Houck, Licensed Massage Therapist The butt muscles aren't activated while sitting much at all.

I have a lot of experience working in the Physical Therapy field, and this has helped my massage skills as it allows me to identify perpetuating factors (ways you may be moving in activities that hurt your body), muscle imbalances (a common one is the front of the legs (quads) being stronger than the back of the legs (glutes and hamstrings). This can lead to sciatica, pain in the front of the hip where it hinges, tightness in the abdomen, etc. My massage approach is definitely self-care and awareness based--I can do what most of the time is more up my ally--gathering information about your body through touch, and seeing where it is weak and where it is stronger through muscle testing and feel. Exploring slow myofascial adjustments to posture (a common one is drawing the shoulder blades in and down, thereby opening up the chest), and talking about small changes during the day that can make a big difference to your pain patterns. I am a big believer of checking out the opposite side of where your pain is. Many times the places that hurt most are the weak, overstretched places and the opposing stronger muscle group must be addressed as well. I believe in sharing stretching and strengthening suggestions for people with chronic issues (after the massage), as well as self-care tips that affect myofascial pain. We can not maintain our pain on the massage table alone. I want to encourage daily habits that will help prevent muscles being thrown out of place, drugs being taken, and surgery being done. Massage Cupping--deep muscle release, lymphatic drainage, soft cupping
facials, or detoxification cupping sessions. Gua Sha--friction massage using smooth stones brushed over the skin to break down adhesions. Kinesio-Taping--supports muscles and encourages them to stay in place! Emotional Acupressure--dealing with the emotional issues in the tissues through accessing specific points/meridians in Chinese Acupressure that correlate to certain emotions (Anxiety, Self-Doubt and Worry, PTSD, Jealousy, Anger, Addiction, etc.) Regular Massage Modalities--Swedish, Myofascial (fave), Neuromuscular, assisted stretching, all the good stuff.

Chronic stress causes the body to be in constant fight or flight, making things like massage, yoga, and nutrition even more vital to regulate hormones and keep our many systems happy. Existing in our individualistic touch-deprived world can be hard at times. Come let it all go and spend time taking care of you. I am honored to be a witness to your self-healing, it is amazing what our bodies can let go of on the massage table if we use our breath and give it permission to go!

Big Pharma has been taking away people’s opiates which has them looking for street drugs…please find a natural alternative for whatever you take as a plan B if s**t hits the fan and the pharmeceutical industry crumbles. Access to pain medication or alternatives to it is important for people in upper levels of pain, and having a plan B will help you not lose your s**t when the system breaks down.

White willow bark—-aspirin

Weed—-mama earth’s pain medicine

CBD—cause THC wasn’t amazing enough, we isolated the body relief aspect of the plant.

Kava—-neurologically calming tea, relaxing, really a game changer

Oregano—-hot herb that kills bacterial fungal AND viral infection. The only essential oil that permeates viral cell walls

Lavender—-the essential oil is the best things for burns. Put it on right away and feel it burn more as it is pulling the burn out of the skin, in a short amount of time the burn will be resolved. It’s magic that belongs in your kitchen.

Puer tea—rich, mineral heavy, caffeine full morning tea coffee replacement. Tastes like tree bark but in a good way. Ancient tree vibes.

Shilajit—minerals minerals minerals. Lack of mineralization plagues a lot of people with tremors and fidgeting, magnesium is a common culprit of muscle spasming. Magnesium oil on skin/epsom salt works better for absorption than taking a pill does, which has to travel through your digestion—minerals absorption on the skin or taking Shilajit will both help get those in with more immediacy than big mineral horse pills.

There are so many other allies for ailments and pain. Please put any other important ones in the comments below.

**I am not telling you to get off your medication. I’m encouraging you to not be solely dependent on it and the system. Have a plan B for if they cut you off. Do not allow yourself to be at the mercy of their whims, and have another solution to your problems in your back pocket.

I know this is much easier said about physical ailment medications, rather than mental health ones. Mental health meds are the most important to make sure our community who needs them has them.

If the system crumbles, what will be your Plan B?

How often has the weight of our thoughts left our body at the wayside, trailing behind us like some puppet at the bidding of its master, waiting for the relief of self-care once the fixation comes to an end? How many times have we shifted from a position we’ve been in too long, remembered a limb that has gone numb, reached out to stretch like a dog that has just gotten up, remembering our physical need to move? Remembering movement, each morning, each day we are evolving towards that self love cultivation, embracing the preventative caring for ourselves. Knowing that when we do, s**t hits the fan less, because we are preparing for the fall-out.

Stop taking magnesium pills! Horse pills are not helping you! They are hard to digest and hard on the kidneys! Spasming is often mineral deficiency! Tinctures, teas, broths, epsom salt bath with a 3-5lb bag of salt per therapeutic bath treatment…those are all your mineral friends friends. We need extra because our soil often doesn’t have it anymore, and we need it in oil on skin, liquid tea broth salt bath hot spring form, not pill form. Why do you think Chinese medicine has so many teas and tinctures? Because they know the truth—the easier the body has processing and assimilating the nutrients, the better. Pills are hard. Liquids are so much easier. Give your body a break and transition from pills to liquids, especially if you are in any state of chronic pain.

Whenever I think of alchemical fire circles, I think of my time driving back to Vegas from the Valley of Fire after my first Mayfire. Jeff McBride and Abigail Spinner, co-creators of the 20 year old fire circle technology, had invited me to present a singing workshop at Mayfire after I sent them my new ‘Song Circle for the People’ website and asked them if they wanted to collaborate on a song writing workshop....

To have the closeness, and then to not... To feel the saltiness of your brow against my forehead, to feel the curve of your body as we huddle for warmth under the blankets. To feel your strong hands upon my body massaging me, and then to not... For so long to not. Slowly, slowly, it happens. Words by words. F**k up by f**k up....

Speaking in grand generalities, ‘Everyone is in pain.’ As a response to my speaking of being in pain diminishes and downsizes what I am trying to tell you. I am trying to tell you that I have been in pain no matter my weight, no matter my size. You don’t believe me because you’ve been fed so full of judgement over bodies and their sizes that you can’t even see straight....
