Our Story
Our mission is to advance the science and practice of regional anesthesia and pain medicine to improve patient outcomes through research, education, and advocacy.
We accomplish our mission and vision by addressing the clinical and professional educational needs of physicians and scientists, ensuring excellence in patient care utilizing regional anesthesia and pain medicine, and investigating the scientific basis of the specialty.
The American Society of Regional Anesthesia was founded on August 2, 1923. In 1939, ASRA merged with the ASA. The Society was reborn as an independent organization in 1975. ASRA is the largest subspecialty society in anesthesiology. Our more than 4,000 members include physicians, scientists, PAs, advanced practice nurses, and trainees, as well as a rich international representation. We hold two CME meetings annually; one is in the spring with a focus on regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine, and one is in the fall with a concentration on chronic pain medicine. We provide more than $200,000 in funding each year to support research in the field.
