International Socialist Organization - Pittsburgh

International Socialist Organization - Pittsburgh We are committed to building a left alternative to a world of war, racism and poverty. We are the Pittsburgh branch of the International Socialist Organization.

Our members are involved in helping to build a number of struggles: the movement to stop American wars abroad, fights against racism and anti-immigrant scapegoating, the struggle for women’s rights like the right to choose abortion, opposing anti-gay bigotry, pushing for environmental justice, and standing up for workers’ rights. If you would like more information about the ISO or want to know abo

ut upcoming activities, please contact us at isopgh@gmail.com. Every month we organize a public meeting on a current political topic, and we often organize public reading groups which you are of course welcome to join! If you want to be added to our mailing list, just shoot us an email and we will keep you updated of our activities.

The government terrorizes immigrant workers not to protect the rest of us but to help corporations by keeping us divided and weak.

The nine days on strike showed the strong support for Oakland teachers and the struggle to save public education at every picket line and every protest — and the determination of the community to hold the line along with teachers. Here, Jenna Woloshyn, a SocialistWorker.org contributor, a Teamster member at UPS and parent of three students in the Oakland Unified School District, tells about her experience in the strike, including a confrontation with members of the school board during a protest against budget cuts.

An Oakland parent of three students talks about the high stakes in the teachers’ strike that brought her back to the picket lines each day.

"I want to ask the question—I want to ask the question of why is it OK for you to push, for you to be—there are so many people. I mean, most of us are new, but many members of Congress have been there forever. Some of them have been there before we were born. So I know many of them, many of them, were fighting—were fighting for people to be freed, for people to live in dignity in South Africa. I know many of them fight for people around the world to have dignity, to have self-determination. So I know—I know that they care about these things. But now that you have two Muslims who are saying, 'Here is a group of people that we want to make sure they have the dignity that you want everybody else to have,' we get to be called names, and we get to be labeled as hateful?"

The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a resolution Thursday condemning anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim discrimination, white supremacy and other forms of hate. The vote was 407 to 23, with nearly two dozen Republicans voting against it. The vote capped a week of intense debate among congress...

Congressional Democrats are attempting to discipline Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar for speaking critically about the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) — and more generally in defense of Palestinian rights — after smearing her as “anti-Semitic.” This comes at the same time that Omar, one of the only Muslim representatives in Congress, has been targeted for death threats and Islamophobic propaganda likening her to those who carried out the 9/11 attacks.

Hundreds of left-wing Jewish activists are raising their voices to condemn the smear campaign directed at Rep. Ilhan Omar.
