Happy Pride!

Being authentically yourself is never a mistake 🌈

Image Description: White Text on a black background.

"We don't come out for heterosexual people to know. We don't come out for the ones who hate us to know. We shout and make as much noise as possible just so other people like us, who are scared and can't be themselves, would know that they are not a mistake, and they are not alone."

We therapists love to ask folks how they're feeling, but sometimes it's hard to gauge. This chart might be helpful and coming up with an answer besides "fine".

We are saddened by the loss of Sue Johnson. Sue was one of the founders of Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) a modality that can be used for couples, families, and individuals. EFT emphasizes the way we form attachments with each other and how important those attachments are to our own mental health.

Sue did a lot of education for other therapists, and several of us have taken at least one course by her. I know that I, at least, feel like I'm a better therapist because of things I learned from her.

On the left is a quote (in the image it is typed in all caps):

Love has an immense ability to help heal the devastating wounds that life sometimes deals us. Love also enhances our sense of connection to the larger world. Loving responsiveness is the foundation of a truly compassionate civilized society. - Sue Johnson

There are many reasons that the therapist who runs this page loves Carl Rogers. This quote is one of them.

Image Description:

The background image is a mountain with a sky during sunset. The sky if a beautiful mix of yellows, oranges, reds, and deeper purples.

The text reads: "People are just as wonderful as sunsets if I can let them be... when I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, 'Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner.' I don't try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds."

Carl Rogers, Freedom to Learn (1969)

Music is one of the many amazing ways we humans have of expressing our thoughts and feelings. Just like you, many of us are gearing up for the release on Friday and we will be ready to process the album with you in the days after.

It's ok to not be ok.

***************

Image description:

In the lower righthand corner, a black hand with red fingernails it turned palm up. In the hand sits a small red bird with black rays emitting from it similar to how the sun's rays are often drawn.

On the left is a poem. The text reads:

I am not okay today.
So, in the absence of okay,
what else can I be?

I can be gentle.
I can be unashamed.
I can turn my pain into connection.
I can be a student of stillness.
I can be awake to nature.
I can sharpen my empathy
against the stone of my
discomfort.

I am not okay today,
but I am many worthy
things.

If needed we can provide citations of the multiple studies that show just how therapeutic animals can be. Not just service animals (who, of course, are amazing) but even your doggo who never learned to heel when you walk him can still heal your emotional scars.

In short, this meme is right. If you have access to a dog/cat/guinea pig that likes being hugged, then by all means do so when you feel down.

A lot of us have decades' experience with negative self talk. When we first start trying to treat ourselves kindly and with grace it might feel weird or forced, but if we keep it up, it will become as natural as thinking nice things about our loved ones does.

The text reads:

If you can't say something nice about yourself, practice.

Here at Auberle, we have therapists who like the symphony, play board games, watch anime, and - in at least one therapist's opinion which she is now a little ashamed of in light of Derek's opinion -think Age of Ultron was one of the better Avengers movies but only, according to her, because she was cheering for Ultron the first half of the movie.

If you want to talk about the societal impact of how Killmonger was depicted, talk about the interpersonal dynamics of your D&D group, or any other geeky topic that factors into your life we are here for you. You can start the process here: https://tinyurl.com/AuberleBH

therapists in media: refined, cultured, poised, "I'm afraid I haven't [heard of the nerdy thing their patient just referenced]"

my old therapist derek, from across the reception area, seeing me for the first time after the summer of 2015: HEY DID YOU SEE AGE OF ULTRON?? IT SUCKED, RIGHT???

my current therapist ian, in our very first appointment: do you like star wars? anxiety is like the force, it can consume you, or you can learn to keep it in balance... you're my padawan now

Today is the international Trans Day of Visibility. This quote from Stonewall Veteran and winner of the 2023 Gay Times International Community Trailblazer, Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, sums up why visibility is so important:

“We have to remain visible. They have to see us, they have to know that we’re not going [nowhere], that we’ve been here ever since God made man and woman, and they have to get over it.

I don’t need their permission to exist; I exist in spite of them. I want you to train and teach and love on and create families within my community and gender non-conforming people, so that we can understand that we have a culture, we have a history, we have a reason to be here.

We have a purpose.

We’re entitled to be loved, and seek happiness, and share that with the people that we care about.”

We agree with her and encourage folks to read up on her story.

Some days we search for quite a while to find the perfect memes. Other days something comes across our personal timeline, and we download it immediately. Today was one of those days.

Whether you're a handsome (probably neurodivergent) doctor, an omnisexual Cardassian, or someone who hasn't even seen DS9, having someone to talk to might be beneficial. We are here when you're ready.

**********

Image Description:
This meme is taken from stills of the show Star Trek: Deep Space 9 (DS9 for short). The two characters are Julian Bashir, a human doctor, and Garak, a Cardassian tailor (who is also a spy).

Bashir: So you're saying that more people should get therapy?
Garak: I'm saying that everyone should get therapy.
Bashir: Even the people who say they don't need it?
Garak (with a mischievous smile): Especially the people who say they don't need it.
