Andrea H., Athletic Trainer II, went to college in central Pennsylvania and then left the state, spending time in Hawaii and Connecticut as she pursued her career in athletic training and got her master's degree. Then last year, two of Andrea's former colleagues contacted her and recruited her to come back home to UPMC.

"They had a position open and told me about all the changes that benefited us as UPMC employees," Andrea said. "The timing was right, so I made the move back and am happy to be home."

"Since being back, I have been promoted to Athletic Trainer II and Site Coordinator of my school. I am enjoying a better work-life balance that isn’t always easy to come by as an Athletic Trainer and I hope to continue to climb the career ladder here at UPMC," Andrea said.

Marisa M., Athletic Trainer II, knew that she wanted to seek out a career in sports medicine since she was in high school. The combination of hands-on health care and athletics seemed to be an ideal job for her. Her career path led her to her position with the UPMC Sports Medicine Department in 2020, where she was contracted to the University of Pittsburgh as the athletic trainer with the women’s lacrosse team.

"UPMC provided the opportunity for me to continue my career in a high-level Division I Athletics environment, where I continue to work today," Marisa said. "I thrive being in a position that pushes me to be a better athletic trainer."

"I genuinely enjoy being challenged with something different each day and playing an active role in student athletes’ recovery from injury. Seeing an athlete progress through their return to sport process is the most rewarding part of the job."

Meet Sharon C., RN III at UPMC McKeesport. Sharon has been a member of the McKeesport nursing team since 1991—back when it was called McKeesport Hospital!

Sharon has spent the majority of her career working on Med-Surg units, with several years also spent as an orthopedic nurse. Sharon enjoys Med-Surg nursing because she gets to care for a wide variety of patients and illnesses; according to her, "it is never boring!"

She has also worked hard to pursue professional development as a nurse, joining the Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses (AMSN) in 2009, which allowed her to attend nursing conventions all over the country, along with serving UPMC's nursing councils including the Professional Practice Council and the Informatics Council. In 2009, she was also a recipient of the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing's Cameo of Caring award.

Sharon's career journey has continued in the past year, when she became a level 3 RN on the new expanded career ladder.

Sharon said, "I love what I do and like working at a smaller community hospital because you get to know so many more people. They are like family!"

"I started my career with UPMC's Athletic Training department in 2008. Growing up, I had a passion for sports and sciences, so athletic training seemed like a perfect career path for me. Once joining UPMC, I was contracted to work with the Pittsburgh Public School District, specifically Perry, Oliver, and Schenley High Schools. In 2022, I was promoted to Pittsburgh City region supervisor, which is my current job title. Becoming more involved in our department not only helped my professional growth but also allowed me to utilize the career ladder that UPMC offers.

Each day, I get to spend time with high school athletes who are very appreciative of the services that I provide for them. No day is ever the same, so it keeps things fresh and exciting. One day I may be working the sidelines of a high school football game, while the next day I could be working with an athlete recovering from an ankle sprain. It is very rewarding to help injured athletes and rehab them back to health. Seeing an athlete return to their sport safely and thank me for all that I’ve done always reminds me why I love my job." - Michael K., Supervisor, Athletic Training

An inspiring story to start your week 💜

Sandy Miller is a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, nurse, caregiver to two rescue dogs and two rescue cats, a UPMC employee, and a cancer patient. But being diagnosed with terminal cancer did not stop Sandy from pursuing a full life. Read Sandy’s full story at the link below. We’re so grateful that Sandy shared her story with us, and know you’ll be inspired by it, too!

“Being diagnosed with terminal cancer did not stop my life. Instead, it enhanced how I see things, it gave me a chance to make time to do the things I always thought I was too busy for, and it reminded me that patience is a virtue (I needed this one). I have met some pretty amazing people along the way. I am busier than ever, and I embrace that; I never want to miss the important things or memories being made. Not every day is roses and rainbows, and believe me—there are dark days. But my mindset and determination have never let me down. I could spend all day telling you what and who I am thankful for: it takes a village of family and friends to keep me going.”

Being diagnosed with terminal cancer did not stop Sandy Miller from pursuing a full life. She shares her story of support and inspiration with UPMC Careers.
