Today, we wanted to shout out a unique part of our UPMC team: volunteers! Our volunteers do so much to help ease the patient experience and offer help to their loved ones in a variety of ways. From being a friendly face at the front desk to sharing their furry friend therapy pets at the bedside, volunteers offer their skills and time to make an impact in unique ways. Working in collaboration with UPMC employees, our volunteers are such an essential part of providing kind, compassionate care in our communities. Thank you, volunteers of UPMC!

After years of working as a radiologic technologist, Leslie felt a pull toward something more meaningful. When a loved one was diagnosed with cancer, it sparked a passion that led her back to school to study Radiation Therapy.
She spent much of her career in Florida, but in 2018, Leslie returned home to Pennsylvania. By 2019, she was ready to get back to what she loves most: caring for patients.
Leslie joined UPMC, drawn by its advanced technology and the opportunity to grow through its career ladder for radiation therapists. In just five years, she’s advanced two positions and now serves as a Clinical Therapist Specialist.
Why Radiation Therapy? Leslie shares a few reasons:
🤝 Building meaningful relationships with patients over weeks of daily care
📆 Enjoying work-life balance with weekends and holidays off
📈 Exploring career growth into roles like Medical Dosimetrist, administration, or education

Her most memorable moments? Watching patients ring the gong at the end of treatment and hearing that she made their journey a little easier. “That means I did my job,” she says.

Happy Surgical Technologists Week, UPMC! 🏥✨
This week, we’re proud to celebrate the incredible surgical technologists across UPMC, like Carissa, who play a vital role in every procedure. From preparing the operating room to ensuring patient safety and supporting our surgical teams, their expertise and dedication are key to delivering world-class care.

In July, we proudly celebrated 10 graduates who completed the rigorous Medical Laboratory Science Program at UPMC Chautauqua, a year of intensive clinical training, academic achievement, and professional growth.
Designed for B.S. post-graduates and students in their final year of a science-based bachelor’s degree, this 12-month NAACLS-accredited program prepares students for national certification exams and careers in clinical laboratory science. It combines:
🧪 Hands-on experience with state-of-the-art lab instruments
📚 In-depth instruction in clinical lab science, management, and education
🏥 Real-world training in a hospital setting
These future lab professionals are now ready to make a difference in healthcare—where precision meets purpose.
Jessica started her journey with UPMC in 2022 as a Security Officer, stepping into healthcare during a time of great change. She showed up every day with compassion and dedication, helping patients and families feel safe and supported.
In 2023, she took her career to the next level by earning her International Association of Hospital Security and Safety (IAHSS) certification in healthcare security and safety. Then came an incredible opportunity: UPMC sponsored her through the Act 120 Police Academy.
After months of intense physical and mental training, Jessica graduated from Mercyhurst Police Academy in December 2024. Today, she proudly serves as a Sr. Police Officer at UPMC Northwest.
Whether she’s celebrating new life with families or offering comfort during difficult moments, Jessica brings heart and strength to every shift.
"UPMC takes pride in all their facilities and cares about their employees — not just in Police and Security, but across the board," Jessica shares.

Meet Montel, a Master of Health Administration student at Texas A&M, who spent his summer making a big impact as an Administrative Resident at UPMC.
Working alongside UPMC leaders, Montel helped lead systemwide initiatives that supported nurses and expanded virtual care. His work included:
✅ Rolling out the Telesitter program
✅ Designing the virtual care center model
✅ Co-leading the RISE Train-the-Trainer initiative to help charge nurses manage moral distress
When he wasn’t at work, Montel enjoyed all that Pittsburgh had to offer — hiking in green spaces, connecting with fellow interns, and checking out local favorites like Picklesburgh and Pirates games ⚾🌳

Juanita’s journey at UPMC is a powerful story of resilience, dedication, and service. As she approaches her 60th birthday, she continues to inspire — balancing life as a wife, mother, grandmother, and fur mom with grace and strength.
Motivated by positive childhood experiences with law enforcement, Juanita graduated from the police academy in 2003 and spent over 20 years serving her community. Her roles as negotiator and member of the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) showcased her exceptional skill and calm under pressure.
After retiring from the Lancaster City Police Department in 2024, Juanita brought her passion for safety and community to UPMC as a Senior Officer. She now helps maintain a secure environment, supports patients and visitors, and exemplifies the power of compassionate policing.
Juanita’s story is a testament to the supportive, family-like culture at UPMC, where teamwork leads to real impact. Her dedication continues to inspire others to follow their dreams and begin their own journey at UPMC.
“I want my son to see that good people can do great things and no matter where you start, you can change your path.”
Starting as a line cook at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital in 2021, Jacoby was driven by a desire to support his young son and inspired by family members in health care. With the support of his mentors, he transitioned into phlebotomy — learning quickly, growing confidently, and now mentoring others. Today, he’s not only a full-time phlebotomist but also a student pursuing Human Resource Management, with dreams of going even further.
From the kitchen to the clinic, Jacoby's journey is a powerful reminder that it's never too late to chase your purpose. 💪✨
