We were honored for the opportunity to spend time with and learn from Dr Withers in a city he has made such a difference in. As the year comes to a close, we would like to thank the 2025 SMISC Board for all of the work they have done to make this such a great year 👏

🎧 New podcast episode! 🎧 In episode 12 season 3 of Street Side, the official SMISC podcast, cohost Michael Brennan talks with Father Greg Boyle. Father Boyle is a native Angeleno and Jesuit priest. From 1986 to 1992, Father Boyle served as the pastor of Dolores Mission Church, then the poorest catholic parish in Los Angeles that also had the highest concentration of gang activity in the city.
Father Boyle witnessed the devastating impact of gang violence on his community during the so called “decade of death” that began in the 1980s and peaked at 1,000 gang related killings in 1992. In the face of law enforcement tactics and criminal justice policies of suppression and mass incarceration as the means to end gang violence, he and parish and community members adopted what was a radical approach at the time: treat gang members as human beings.

Welcome to the new Street Medicine Institute Student Coalition!
Do you volunteer with a student-led street medicine program? Are you interested in starting a street medicine program at your school? Are you passionate about patient-centered, quality, compassionate care for people experiencing homelessness?
The Street Medicine Institute Student Coalition (SMISC) is here for you! We’re focused on uniting all students interested in street medicine to share our best practices, resources, ideas and research. As part of the international Street Medicine Institute, we are dedicated to helping students start and grow programs that provide health care to the unsheltered homeless where they live.
With coalition members representing more than 30 medical and health profession schools in 18 states, plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, SMISC is here to help turn our collective passion into action and excellence for our clients on the streets.
With the Street Medicine Institute, we hope to accomplish our mission through:
Encouragement of a global Street Medicine student community
Collaborative consultation and sharing of resources designed to assist student organizations in establishing or improving their own Street Medicine programs
Documentation and sharing of students’ research and best practices in the delivery of high-quality Street Medicine
Organization of service-oriented Street Medicine learning opportunities for students
Engaging the Street Medicine Institute Board of Directors for their insight and discussion of student ideas and perspectives
Advocacy for and with people experiencing homelessness
Embodiment of humility by valuing the unique story of each patient and continuously seeking their perspectives and feedback to provide reality-based, patient-centered care
