Bringing some awareness on this MHAD. Why it is sooo important to be intentional about your birth team, provider, and location…. Pittsburgh has been identified as having some of the worst maternal health outcomes in the U.S., particularly for Black women, who face mortality rates higher than their peers in 97% of other American cities. Key issues include significant racial disparities in care, high infant mortality, and high rates of preventable maternal deaths.

I’ve been sitting here trying to come up with a caption for how much attending births means to me, and it is so hard to put into words. Being invited into spaces that are so intimate and special- to hold space for you, comfort you, reassure you, bring relief and coaching and guidance to you, help your partner to feel excited and comfortable too- I never take it for granted. In fact when I finished my doula training in 2017, I started taking births almost immediately and still recall the strength of the women I have served over 8 years ago.
