The transitional character is someone who, in a single generation, changes the entire course of a lineage. This is therapy for the curse breakers.

This is therapy for people who want to see beyond themselves and envision a better world for everybody.

We made the front page of and I’m definitely not crying…

It was an absolute honor to have a Pittsburgh legend (and arguably the most dynamic person to ever interview me) write about us and the work we’re doing to create the community that often gets overlooked in the mental health world. 📰 Our first article!! We’re so glad they put the emphasis on “shoes off” 🙃

This week, Pittsburgh City Paper featured our practice, our team, and our community in a piece that really gets what we’re doing here — building a different kind of therapy practice. One that feels less like a office and more like home. One where joy, grief, and healing can all sit on the same couch.

We’re proud to be the first group in Pittsburgh to offer decolonial, liberation-focused care and the community that grows out of it. Liberation is not just a name or a stated value– it’s a deeply rooted practice informed by decades of study, education, and leadership from our founder, Liana Maneese, a published expert in the field. Now that the cat is out of the bag, we want to clarify that this work and the terminology that can be repurposed or rebranded is the product of a way of life and not simply an association with it to.

🖤 Juneteenth: We Remember. We Resist. We Reimagine. 🖤

Juneteenth is not just a celebration.
It’s a rupture.
A reminder that our freedom was delayed—not gifted.
That Black liberation has never been guaranteed in this country.
That we are still carrying the trauma of a lie disguised as freedom.

AND THAT MOST OF ALL OUR FREEDOM IS CONNECTED!

At Transitional Characters, we know liberation doesn’t come from policy alone.
It comes from truth-telling. From healing. From interrupting the systems inside and outside of us that tell us we are not whole, not worthy, not free.

Today, we honor our ancestors.
We name the weight we carry.
And we invite you to do more than post a hashtag.

📣 Take action:
• Support Black-led healing spaces. (That’s us!)
• Invest in liberation—not diversity optics. (We have a fund!)
• Sit in the discomfort.
• Talk to your people.
• Look at where you benefit from the same systems that once enslaved us.

This is not simply holiday for all of us. Some will find Black joy and others will work for justice and carry the weight they have put on to Black bodies for too long systematically and in their own families.
This is a call to remember and recommit.
To get free together—because none of us are free until all of us are.
