New spine research you should know about 🧠🦴

First author 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨, former graduate student researcher, et al recently published “Development and Reliability of a Systematic Method to Evaluate Lumbar Paraspinal Muscle Size and Quality in Computed Tomography Images” in the North American Spine Society Journal. This study introduces a reliable, systematic approach to evaluating lumbar paraspinal muscles using CT imaging, an important step forward for spine research and clinical assessment.

We’re proud to share that 𝐃𝐫. 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐏𝐢𝐯𝐚, Interim Chair and 𝐃𝐫. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧, collaborated on this impactful work, along with PT student researchers, 𝐑𝐚𝐟𝐚𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐬𝐚 and 𝐋𝐮𝐢𝐳𝐚 𝐖𝐞𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐧.

New research is shedding light on an often-overlooked population. 🔍

A study by Samantha J. Werts-Pelter et al, “Associations of Obesity with Function and Patient-Reported Outcomes Among Rural Advanced Cancer Patients,” has been published in Cancers. The paper examines how obesity relates to function and patient-reported outcomes in rural patients with advanced cancer, offering important insights for care and rehabilitation.

Future PTs in the University of Pittsburgh’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program now learn through meaningful, real-world partnerships — from youth fitness groups and pro-bono clinics to adaptive sports and wellness programs. Community engagement isn’t an add-on — it’s part of the core curriculum, helping students understand social factors that impact health and shaping them into compassionate clinicians who meet people where they are. 🎉 Congratulations 🎉 to third-year DPT student 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗛𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗻, whose first-author manuscript has been accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal Physiotherapy Theory and Practice. The paper, titled “SmartBack: A Preliminary Study of Remotely-Delivered, Personalized Education for Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain,” presents early findings on a novel digital approach to patient education and self-management.

Co-authors include PT faculty member 𝗗𝗿. 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝘃𝗲, along with Dr. Yanshan Wang, Dr. Leming Zhou, and PhD student Yi Xu from SHRS Health Informatics.
