Recovering from surgery starts with preparing for surgery with “prehab” and continues afterwards—rehabilitation is a critical part of the healing process.

Pre-hab, or exercising to prepare for surgery and post-surgical rehab help restore strength, improve mobility, and reduce pain so you can safely return to daily activities. Without proper rehab, patients may experience stiffness, muscle weakness, or delayed recovery. Guided home exercises and physical therapy are critical to you returning to an active lifestyle quickly and achieve the best outcomes while preventing adverse events like blood clots or joint stiffness.

Why is it important to have a “Coach” to support you before and after surgery?

A Coach can be your spouse, a son or daughter, or friend who will help you to prepare for surgery as well as partner with us in the hospital and at home after surgery. The Coach (or Co-Coaches if it is easier to have two people to share the role) will be part of your care team and serve as the primary support person.

In honor of International Women’s Day, let’s raise awareness about the Musculoskeletal Syndrome of Menopause (MSM) and how it can impact women’s health.

Did you know that 70% of all midlife women will experience musculoskeletal symptoms like joint pain, muscle loss, and bone density reduction? During perimenopause, women see an average 10% reduction in bone mineral density, and after menopause, muscle mass declines by 0.6% per year. Prevention and active treatment are essential for staying strong and healthy during this critical period.

Exercise is the most powerful longevity drug.

Regular exercise isn’t just about living longer, it’s about living better. Strength and aerobic fitness protect your heart, brain, balance, and independence as you age. Low muscle strength is linked to higher risk of disease, falls, and early death, while staying active preserves healthspan and quality of life.

The goal isn’t just to exercise, it’s to train for life. The effort you put in now determines the freedom you’ll have later.

Coming Soon: Dr. DiGioia’s Joint Effort Second Opinion

Using AI/Machine Learning technologies coupled with clinical expertise, we first determine the level of arthritis in your knee and/or hip from xrays that you already have completed, measure how much pain you’re experiencing and how it affects your daily activities, and then bring it all together to help answer an important question:

👉 Are you currently a candidate for joint replacement surgery, or is it best to continue non-operative treatment?

If surgery isn’t the right step yet, Joint Effort Second Opinion also offers guidance on how to manage symptoms and treat arthritis effectively.

Informed decisions start here. https://www.pittsburghboneandjoint.com/jeso

Toward Medicine 3.0

Healthcare is shifting from reacting to disease to preventing it. Medicine 3.0 focuses on:
• Prevention over reaction
• Personalized care for every individual
• Honest assessment of risk, including doing nothing
• Prioritizing healthspan—living better, not just longer

Neglecting healthspan now leads to more suffering down the road. The future of medicine is proactive, preventive, and centered on helping people of all ages thrive.

On the clinical side, currently over half of our patients now go home the day of the surgery…….what’s next? Well, see below and maybe you won’t even have to come into the hospital for surgery in the future! 🙂

Thinking about joint replacement surgery? Smoking matters more than you think. 🚭🦴

Smoking is a major risk factor for patients undergoing joint replacement. Ni****ne constricts blood vessels, limiting blood flow that’s essential for healing. This can lead to delayed wound healing, increased inflammation, and a higher risk of complications like pneumonia after surgery.
The good news? Reducing or quitting to***co use can decrease inflammation and improve your body’s ability to heal—helping you get back to moving stronger, faster.
