It’s known that *all* children benefit from visual supports within their environment, especially those who are struggling to acquire language.

AAC is a powerful tool that helps individuals express themselves, communicate effectively, and connect with the world around them. It’s not a last resort, but a tool within a robust toolkit that can be used within speech and language therapy to enhance communication skills.

Let’s recognize the value of AAC and provide equal opportunities for everyone to express themselves and reach their full potential! Join us for AAC Tip Tuesdays, where we’ll share invaluable insights for caregivers and teams to seamlessly integrate AAC into daily routines. Let’s make communication accessible for all!

Just a friendly reminder!

Hearing is essential for developing spoken communication skills. So, if your child is getting frequent ear infections, it’s good to be aware of this.

Hearing problems can be easily missed, and it’s one of the first things we do when a child starts speech therapy — check their hearing.

If for some reason your child missed the infant hearing screening at birth, be sure to have that completed, too.

✨tips to increase your child’s language skills ✨

⭐️ Narrate Everything - When you're cleaning the kitchen or giving them a bath, talk out loud about what you’re doing.
"Mommy is grabbing the cup and I'm going to pour milk in! Pour!"
⭐️ Repeat their words +1 word When your child says 2 words ("Car go!"), you add one more ("Car go FAST!") It gives them more context and teaches new vocabulary.
⭐️ Narrate their play just like narrating what you're doing all the time, talk about what they are doing during play.
⭐️ Read! Reading is important for language and vocabulary development. Even if your child prefers to read the same story every night, encourage them to turn the pages, retell it themselves, and talk about out pictures in the book
⭐️ Sing! ALL the time. Make up silly songs about what you're doing or what they're doing. You can even try singing their favorite songs and pausing to see if they fill in a word!

Dishes. They can be hard to wash. If I don’t use water, I have to scrub harder, use more force, take more time, and ultimately the end result isn’t super sanitary. It’s much more effective to use water.

Trying to address speech and language without addressing executive functioning is very much the same. It can be done, but it will likely be more difficult and take more time.

Why is this? Well, the executive functioning system regulates us to all that we do. It is integral in our ability to connect with or be aware of stimuli in our environment. The EF system, in particular working memory, is what allows our brain to hold onto information long enough for our speech and language “workers” to process the information. Our EF system is what drives our initiation and self-monitoring of new speech and language learning. It is critical to the generalization or carryover of skills to independent and natural environments.

So yes, we can wash our dishes without water. But why would we do that if there’s a better way?
