Staff are specifically trained in this concept of ability/activity based programming with the outcome of providing an environment of minimizing the negative affects of the Alzheimer’s disease process. Personal interaction between resident and staff is critical and an integral part of the philosophy of our Garden Courts. The intent of Garden Court is to provide consistency with well-trained and committed staff with a resulting safe environment conducive to reducing anxiety and confusion with the population we serve. Memory Lane: Fitness for the Mind presents the 12 Days of Christmas, Tips for Making the Holidays Memorable.

On the Eleventh Day of Christmas… Communication is Key!

• Keep conversations to one topic. Multiple conversations occurring at the same time may prove overwhelming to your loved on.

• Using long pauses between sentences can increase your loved one’s ability to understand what you are communicating, and will help with their delay in processing.

• It is very common for someone with cognitive impairment to ask about loved ones who have passed, to look for their mom or dad, or to make statements that you know to be inaccurate. In your loved one’s mind, all they are saying is true. It is best to enter into their reality and redirect the conversation to a different topic rather than to correct them.

On the Tenth Day of Christmas… Consider Preparing a De-Escalation Space.

Despite all of our best efforts to prepare and prevent issues, your loved one may still become overwhelmed.

Preparing a special room in your home that your loved one can go to if they get overwhelmed. This room can be equipped with soft lighting, light music and some familiar items that your loved one will recognize.

Memory Lane: Fitness for the Mind presents the 12 Days of Christmas, Tips for Making the Holidays Memorable.

On the Ninth Day of Christmas… Be Aware of Visual Spatial Changes.

Did you know that many forms of memory impairment also cause visual spatial changes in an individual? Here are some helpful tips to use at home to ensure that your loved one remains safe.

• If your bathroom has white or light-colored walls behind the commode, this may make it more difficult for your loved one to identify the location of the commode within the space, potentially leading to your loved one missing the seat when sitting, or decrease accuracy with aim for your male loved one. Monitoring bathroom usage and being available to provide assistance will help to keep them safe.

• Consider using red or other colored place setting when serving your loved one with memory impairment. A contrast color beneath the food has been proven to increase appetite.

• Watch your loved one closely when they are using or are near stair cases, curbs, lips on sidewalks or any other change in plane, as depth perception may be impaired.

If bringing your loved one home for the holiday, be prepared to provide an additional level of assistance.

On the Seventh Day of Christmas… Classic Christmas is Key!

What other holiday has its own set of songs? While you might have some new favorites, your loved one with memory impairment won’t respond the same as with old holiday favorites.

Incorporating old classics into your playlist will not only provide a sense of familiarity to your loved one, but may also help them to communicate and participate easier.

Memory Lane: Fitness for the Mind presents the 12 Days of Christmas, Tips for Making the Holidays Memorable.

On the Fifth Day of Christmas… Don’t Stress Over the Perfect Gift.

Buying gifts for a memory impaired individual can be challenging, and often times the process of receiving gifts can be overwhelming for an individual who may become overstimulated with too many, or upset over not being able to reciprocate.

Try to keep gifts to a minimum; 1 to 3 gifts for loved one will be plenty. Any more, and your loved one may lose interest before the gift exchange is over, or become confused with all of the new items.

If struggling to find the perfect gift, try something from the heart such as a photo album with old photos, or a special baked good.

On the Fourth Day of Christmas… Keep Gatherings Intimate.

The fewer people around your memory impaired loved one, the easier it will be for that individual. Less noise, movement, and people talking over each other will make it more likely for your loved one to become engaged with the holiday event.

You may find it helpful to prepare family in advance for the changes they might see with your loved one. If you have loved ones traveling from out of town who haven’t seen your cognitively impaired loved one in some time, they may not have a full understanding of the challenges that individual faces. Some good reminders for everyone are to not overcrowd, speak slowly, and watch for signs of agitation. Making interactions low key will help everyone to have an easier and more enjoyable holiday gathering.
