Fold3 provides convenient access to US military records, including the stories, photos, and personal documents of the men and women who served. The Fold3 name comes from a traditional flag folding ceremony in which the third fold is made in honor and remembrance of veterans who served in defense of their country and to maintain peace throughout the world. Original records at Fold3 help you discover and share stories about these everyday heroes, forgotten soldiers, and the families that supported them. On Fold3, you can combine records found on the site with what you have in your own albums and shoeboxes to create an online memorial for someone who served.

On this night in 1942, Los Angeles engaged in a "battle" with an enemy that never showed up. Months after Pearl Harbor, a nervous West Coast thought LA was under attack. The military sent a barrage of shells into the sky, and searchlights converged on an object that looked like a classic saucer. Was it a weather balloon? A cloud? It's a mystery that lasts to this day. This photo came from The LA Times on 2/26/1942. Learn more here: https://f3.social/6y9i

On February 20, 1944, 1st Lt. William Lawley was flying this shredded B-17 over Europe. His situation was dire. The flight controls were shot out, and his co-pilot was dead. Lawley himself was severely wounded and blinded by his own blood; he shouted for the crew to bail out, but when he learned two crewmen were too wounded to jump, he stayed. Despite massive blood loss that caused him to faint twice, Lawley managed to crash-land this plane. He was later awarded the Medal of Honor. https://f3.social/6yckLawley

During a brutal house-to-house battle in Oberhoffen, France, in February 1945, Sgt. Emile Deleau repeatedly risked everything to protect his squad. Facing heavy machine-gun fire, he advanced solo across open ground to clear enemy strongpoints with grenades and his submachine gun. While attempting to knock out a final enemy position, he was killed in action and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor: https://f3.social/6ycg

As US infantry closed in during February 1945, retreating Germans realized they couldn't hold the line. Their solution? Turning the landscape into a weapon. German engineers blew open the discharge valves of the massive Schwammenauel Dam, flooding the Roer River Valley. This aerial photo was captured a few hours after the flood. The valley was turned into a muddy marsh, delaying the US Ninth Army's crossing by two weeks. https://f3.social/6ycf

Imagine a POW camp built for 10,000. Now, imagine cramming more than 110,000 people into the same space. By April 29, 1945, Stalag VII-A (Moosburg) had become N**i Germany's largest POW camp. U.S. Air Corps and Ground Forces were packed in the camp, battling extreme overcrowding and dwindling rations. This photo captures newly liberated prisoners awaiting their turn to be evacuated by US 9th Troop Carriers. https://f3.social/6ycc
