On July 22, 1944, near Afua, New Guinea, Pvt. Donald R. Lobaugh made the ultimate sacrifice. When his company was trapped by enemy fire, he volunteered to take out a key machine gun blocking their only escape. Wounded while crossing open ground, he kept going—rushing the position, killing enemy soldiers, and drawing fire so his comrades could advance. His bravery broke the enemy line and saved lives. Lobaugh's fearless actions earned him the Medal of Honor and remain a powerful symbol of courage. https://f3.social/6y9w

On July 17, 1944, 320 seamen were killed in a massive explosion at Port Chicago, California, when two ammunition ships detonated. Over 200 of the victims were Black enlisted men, serving under racially segregated conditions.

In the aftermath, 50 Black survivors refused an order to load more munitions. This act led to their court-martial and imprisonment until 1946. One of the last surviving men, Freddie Meeks, pictured here, was pardoned by President Clinton in 1999. Learn more here: https://f3.social/6y9t
