🍼 Why I love side-lying bottle feeding

Sidelying positioning allows babies to have more control during feeds. Instead of gravity increasing milk flow, baby can pause, breathe, and regulate more easily.

I often recommend it for babies who:
• Gulp or cough during feeds
• Struggle with suck–swallow–breathe coordination
• Have reflux
• Tire easily

This position can:
✔️ Improve feeding organization
✔️ Reduce stress
✔️ Support nervous system regulation
✔️ Encourage safer, more comfortable feeds

Feeding should feel calm — not rushed.

If you’re unsure whether sidelying is right for your baby, a feeding evaluation can help determine the best approach 💛

✨ We’re excited to introduce SoftSpot at Baby & Beyond Therapy!

SoftSpot is an innovative, at-home cranial measurement tool that helps track head shape, cranial growth, and plagiocephaly using AI technology.

Here’s how it works:
📸 Families or therapists take a simple photo using a phone
📤 Images are uploaded for analysis
📊 Results provide cranial measurements and track asymmetry over time

💡 Early detection and therapy can support healthy development and, in some cases, help prevent the need for helmet therapy.

SoftSpot allows us to move away from “wait and see” and toward early, informed intervention — giving families clarity and confidence in their next steps.

If you have questions about SoftSpot or cranial development, we’re here to help 💛

What is the Gnosh Side Biter?

The Side Biter is an oral motor tool therapists use to help children develop stronger, more coordinated oral motor and chewing patterns.

It can support:
✔️ Jaw strength
✔️ Bite grading
✔️ Lateral tongue movement
✔️Transitioning to textured foods
✔️Acceptance of new foods

Chewing is a complex skill — and for some children, it needs structured practice.

Like any therapeutic tool, the Side Biter works best when paired with a comprehensive feeding assessment and individualized plan.

If your child swallows without chewing, avoids textured foods, or struggles with jaw strength, feeding therapy can help guide the right interventions 💛

💬 Bodywork and therapeutic intervention are not the same — and they serve different purposes.

Bodywork can help reduce tension and prepare the body for functional activities.
Therapeutic intervention focuses on teaching functional skills — feeding, movement, regulation, and daily routines.

✨ When used thoughtfully together, they can complement one another — but therapy is what helps skills carry over into everyday life.

As an occupational therapist, my role is to look beyond structure and focus on how a baby functions — supporting safe, meaningful, and lasting change for both baby and family.

🍼 Reflux in babies can show up in many ways — not just spit-up.

Some common signs of reflux include:

• Frequent spit-up or vomiting
• Arching the back or stiffening during or after feeds
• Fussiness, crying, or discomfort around feeding
• Pulling away from the breast or bottle
• Coughing, gagging, or hiccups during feeds
• Wet or gurgly sounds after eating
• Difficulty settling or discomfort when lying flat

For some babies, reflux is mild and improves with time.
For others, it can interfere with feeding, sleep, and overall comfort.

✨ Reflux can also be connected to feeding mechanics, oral motor challenges, tension, or coordination difficulties — not just the stomach alone.

If feeding feels stressful, painful, or exhausting for your baby (or for you), a feeding evaluation can help identify what’s contributing and how to support safer, more comfortable feeding 💛

Stretching and strengthening are very important after a frenectomy. They are not the same thing.

👇 Stretching helps healing — exercising helps your little one use their tongue the right way! Both are key for a smooth recovery 💕👅

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours. I am beyond grateful for all the families who have allowed me into their lives. These families have touched my heart in so many ways. I hope everyone gets to spend this Thanksgiving with family and enjoys the company of their loved ones.

As an occupational therapist, I love using pacifiers with babies to help with feeding and regulation. Pacifiers are a great tool to work on suck strengthening, help reflux, and calm a baby. Pacifiers can also help stimulate digestion. But pacifiers should not be used long term. The longer a baby uses a pacifier the harder it is to wean from using a pacifier. After six months of age, pacifiers use are no longer used for non-nutritive sucking and used more to meet sensory needs.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians recommends weaning children from pacifiers from 6-12 months to prevent ear infections. Pacifier use after three years of age is associated with a higher incidence of malocclusion.

Finding a replacement for the pacifier might be needed if a baby has a hard time weaning.

So honored to be featured in ! The link to the full article is in my bio! If you are new here, this is a wonderful interview explaining my why and how I started out as an occupational therapist to opening my own practice. It is so amazing to reflect back on the past two years and how far Baby and Beyond Therapy has come. I am greatly thankful for all the support I have received from family and friends and being able to support families in my community.

I am so lucky to help families and make a difference in their lives. I strive to create a relationship with my families and be their biggest supporter. I want to empower them to feel that they can make a difference in their child’s life.

Feeding therapy should be fun. Children learn best through play. A good occupational therapist will make therapy look like play. What people sometimes don’t see or understand is all the things that occur before, during, and after therapy. Feeding therapy can be complex and there are many things to consider when planning a treatment session and making recommendations. There are no recipes to follow. Each child is unique and requires individual treatment planning.
