Hope in the Darkness

As time change is upon and we are entering into the blur of the Holiday hustle. Tis’ the Season. The gatherings, the movies, the parties, the lights and carols all speak of connection, joy and hopeful expectation. Yet, for many, this season is better reflected its darkness. For those who struggle with mental illness or painful losses and loneliness this time of year is a reminder of hope deferred and dreary darkness. Nature mirrors this experience as light impatiently rushes through the southern horizon only to prematurely disappear and give way to a stubborn darkness that lingers beyond its welcome. We cannot stop the on-going march of darkness. For many of us who struggle with the long shadows of painful trauma, heartbreaking losses and unwelcomed mental illness, this experience is all too familiar.

Yet, it is here we can discover the deeper truth of Christmas. Nature is our Narrator. The Winter Solstice marks the darkest day of year. This stubborn Solstice darkness typically lingers on for 3 days. It is 3 days after the Winter Solstice that the light begins to grow. This is Christmas Day. Christmas is wrapped in something much greater than mere sentimentality, it is the timeless truth of light beginning to grow in the midst of darkness. It reminds us that the darkness may be inevitable, but so is the light.

For those of us who wrestle with depression, anxiety, overwhelming loss or a painful past, the Holiday Season can only emphasize the darkness. Yet, this Holiday Season may we hold audacious hope to discover growing light in the midst of the darkness. Christmas Day reminds us that light is coming and we can discover this light in the small and meaningful moments. We also have opportunities to create new, better experiences for ourselves and those around us. We have opportunities to create light in dark places.

The team at Renovari Counseling is here to help you discover the light of hope in the midst of the darkness you may be struggling with. Reach out today.
