Let's talk about contractions!

In the Birth 101 Class we will talk about all things contractions, what to expect, how to relax your body during, what to do in between, and how to time them!

In the photos below are some contractions I had with my son 3 days before he was born. If you look at the frequency, you can see that the times were all over the place, 4 minutes, 12 minutes, 2 minutes, 6 minutes. And the duration of the contractions were also not consistent.

I was 41 weeks and 3 days pregnant, ready to have my baby, so I eagerly timed contractions but he was not ready! Next post will have my contractions the day I had my son😊

Continued in post to follow!

It's probably time to introduce myself again!
Hi! I am Kaylee Santana, a birth doula, childbirth educator, and breastfeeding counselor in El Dorado County, California. I have always been obsessed with all things birth and babies, and that love just keeps growing! My favorite thing to do is grab a coffee and talk birth stories 😊.
I attended my first in-person birth in 2018 and knew that I was meant to serve women and families in this stage of life! I started formal training, internships, and worked alongside a homebirth midwife, and I'm always looking to improve my knowledge to best support moms and babies. Every birth I've attended has its own unique story, and that's what I love about birth. After years of learning, researching, training, and working, it has never gotten old - never mundane, always momentous.

100% agree with this post! Its common practice because the molding of the babies head can look concerning, so let's instead talk about what to expect! The more educated we become on physiological birth, the less we lean on the common labor and birth practices and hospital protocol that can interrupt natural processes with our babies!

Take the hat off.

The first hour after birth isn’t just sentimental.

It’s hormonal. It’s biological, and it’s powerful.

Right after birth a mother’s body is flooded with oxytocin, the hormone that helps:

💎the uterus contract and slow bleeding
💎the placenta separate and be born
💎the mother and baby bond
💎the baby begin breastfeeding

And guess what helps drive that hormonal cascade?

👉🏾Touch. Warmth. Skin-to-skin. And smell.

When a baby is placed directly on their mother’s chest, mothers instinctively touch, kiss, and smell their baby’s head.

That newborn scent isn’t random.

It’s a powerful sensory signal that stimulates oxytocin and activates bonding behaviors in the brain.

Now here’s the part most people don’t question.

The hat that gets immediately placed on the baby’s head interrupting all the signaling.

Hospital hats were originally introduced to prevent babies from losing heat through their heads.

But research on immediate postpartum care shows that skin-to-skin itself regulates a baby’s temperature extremely well.

In fact, a 2023 study found no measurable difference in hypothermia rates between newborns wearing hats and those without hats during the immediate postpartum period.

Because when babies are skin-to-skin, something incredible happens.

The mother’s chest actually adjusts temperature in response to the baby, warming or cooling to keep them stable. Researchers call this thermal synchrony.

So if skin-to-skin already regulates temperature…

Why are we still covering the baby’s head during the most hormonally sensitive hour of life?

Covering the head may reduce the very sensory cues that drive the oxytocin feedback loop:

🔁 smelling the baby
🔁 kissing the baby’s head
🔁 full skin-to-skin sensory contact

In physiologic birth settings, like homebirths and out of hospital birth centers, we often have a different approach:

⭐️ Baby naked on the mother’s chest.
⭐️ No hat during the golden hour.
⭐️ A warm blanket over baby’s back.
⭐️ Everyone stepping back while mother and baby find each other.

Because birth physiology is delicate.

It responds to touch, scent, warmth, and connection.

Sometimes routines become so normal that we stop asking whether they actually help.

And sometimes the most powerful intervention is the simplest one.

Skin-to-skin, access to baby’s head and scent while the mother and baby learning each other.

Hats are interrupting this very important process for healthy term babies.

As I sit and wait for a sweet baby girl to enter the world, I can't help but be thankful for being part of this process.
A new soul is near and getting ready to be birthed into this world in their perfect time.
It is so incredibly impactful to bare witness to such a sacred event.
Never Mundane, Always Momentous.

This is the happiest I have ever been with only 2.5 hours of sleep and being awake for 22 hours straight before that!
Thursday night to very early Friday morning I had the privilege of attending my first homebirth as a Doula! It was truly an honor to get to support both first time mom and dad through their beautiful birth in their sweet home. Mom, Dad, and Baby are doing beautifully🤍
I can't believe that this is my job! First of my births for my certification and I cannot wait for the next!

Welcome from Bump to Baby to Breast!
My name is Kaylee Santana and I am currently in training at International Doula Institute to become a Certified Birth Doula, Postpartum Doula, Childbirth Educator, and Advanced Breastfeeding Counselor!
I started my courses for my certifications in January 2022 and can not wait to share pictures of my certifications once completed! For now, I am learning, studying, reading, and taking lots of notes on how best I can serve birthing women in my community.
But soon I will be side by side with the moms and dads around me, supporting and cheering them on in their journey into parenthood!
Tomorrow starts National Doula Week and I will be sharing info everyday about what doulas are all about!
