In honor of K9 Apollo, here is his evaluation review with Sheriff Leikauf from a few years ago. Apollo was a true asset to the communities of El Dorado County and the employees of the Sheriff's Office. Apollo's work alongside his handler Deputy Hellam, helped create the safe communities that we live in.

It is with great sadness that the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of our beloved K9 Apollo. On April 16th, 2026, K9 Apollo suffered an unexpected medical emergency following an exercise session while at home. Although Apollo was rushed to an emergency veterinarian and underwent emergency surgery, he did not survive. He was just six years old at the time of his unfortunate passing. He was surrounded by his family, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit and numerous EDSO and allied law enforcement agency personnel.

Apollo was a purebred German Shepherd from the Czech Republic. He started his law enforcement career with Deputy Hellam in November of 2020 when he was only 10 months old. Cross-trained in handler protection and narcotics detection he made numerous physical apprehensions of dangerous criminals and his mere presence facilitated many more peaceful surrenders.

Apollo was a true asset to the communities of El Dorado County as not only an apprehension and detection K9 but also loved for his various demonstrations at schools and public events. His demeanor was a perfect blend of calmness and laser focused seriousness when his talents were needed. Not only was he an ideal Sheriff’s K9, but he was also a loving family dog as well.

When a call for help comes in, the first voice heard is from those working in Central Dispatch. Without that answered call, the calm reassurance on the line, the steadfast instructions and “help is on the way”, lives would be left hanging in the balance. This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office is extremely proud of our Dispatchers and thankful for of all those who work as Public Safety Telecommunicators.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) was created in 2017 and has always utilized a two prong approach of outreach and enforcement. This method has been very beneficial for both the homeless individual and the community. With every person we contact we assess their needs and work with them to get out of homelessness. However, many homeless people in our community are resistant to assistance and continue to commit crimes to sustain their lifestyle. This is where enforcement is utilized.

EDSO stays committed to total enforcement on crime and criminals, and total care for the community. EDSO has changed the name of HOT to HEAT, the Homeless Enforcement & Assistance Team. Our focus remains unchanged and outreach is still the main component of our mission. We will continue to help those wanting assistance, but we will not tolerate anyone who victimizes our community and our citizens. HEAT can be reached at 530-621-7535 or heat@eldoradosheriff.gov
