✨We Are Not Invisible: Doulas & The Work of Survival✨ I felt so lucky to be able to view this documentary on Friday. It was a last minute decision for me and my husband, Isaiah, and it was a night incredibly well spent. The documentary starred some of my friends who move mountains in the Indiana birth workers community as well as doctors and advanced practice medical professionals that weighed in on the appalling maternal and infant mortality rates in Indiana.

Statistics to remember if you don’t know already:
⚪️Indiana is 47 out of 50 for maternal mortality rates in the US
⚪️Up to 85% of the deaths that make up that horrible statistic are preventable

Seeing the people who showed up for this documentary was so moving. It was just an echo chamber (as Isaiah called it) of birth workers talking to themselves. There were other community people and even people who aren’t familiar with birth who showed up to support something so important.

I have had the absolute JOY of working alongside one of the most inspirational woman in our community: ❤️
She’s had such an immense impact on me as a birth worker and ESPECIALLY on me as a human. She inspires me to not only speak up but SHOW up for things I’m passionate about. Thank you, Joi, for showing us all such a great example of how change can be made! I’m so proud to know you and so excited to continue watching this program flourish. 🤎💛💚💜

✨HAPPY BLACK DOULA DAY✨ 2025 is my 3rd year as a doula and today is the second official ! The job we do is so full, of heart, of love, of power and also full of WORK. Work that sometimes feels impossible. We as black doulas/birth workers are endlessly trying to move the needle and improve a broken system that we are forced to birth within. I’ve tagged some of the lovely doulas in my community who really deserve their flowers on this day!❤️ love you all and let’s keep working towards a better future ✨🤎

✨HAPPY WORLD DOULA WEEK✨ This week inspires me every year (look at me, actually posting to social media💁🏽‍♀️🎉) whether it’s because of the reflection I do when thinking of my doula career thus far or because of all the great posts & info I come across..

But this year I didn’t just want to acknowledge the week and the doulas and outcomes it celebrates/encourages. I wanted to shout out some awesome client moments I’ve gotten to be apart of this year!

1. a bad ass 2nd time mom getting her VBAC (with a 10 CHUNK!!) against all odds just to “spite the doctors who said she couldn’t do it”! ICONIC💅🏽💅🏽
2. Me and my client getting mistaken for sisters and laughing our way through her labor about it 😂(she also NAILED pushing as a first time parent with an epidural👏🏽)
3. My first EVER doula client (that baby is 2 now🥹) reaching and requesting my services for a new pregnancy!!

I wouldn’t be the doula I am today, and the one I’ll continue to evolve into, without all my amazing clients! I cherish all of you! HAPPY WORLD DOULA WEEK!❤️❤️❤️ 🌈

Now that the feeling of impending doom, shock, terror and nausea have slightly subsided I wanted to make a comment on all this. If you voted this year, good. No matter what it’s important that we use our voices to help us all move forward to a future we’d like to see. Now… I’m not saying if you voted opposite than me, specifically for Trump, that you’re a bad person, or racist, or homophobic, or transphobic, or xenophobic… but I am saying that you should do a bit a self reflection for some unconscious biases. Because while those prejudices might not always be in the forefront of your mind, or even at the forefront of your mind when you voted, you are complicit in those biases now. You are complicit in the harmful, dangerous rhetoric against trans people, against immigrants, and against those that are different. And that is so beyond okay or excusable. Yes, there are so many things that need to change for the better in this country. But for you to stand by and watch as a person who uses, allows, and even advocates for this disgusting discourse against minority groups in our county and allow him and his abhorrent behavior to make it into the highest power, the highest office in our country…. It’s not okay. And I can be upset, I can be mad, I can cry. But you cannot continue to claim that you have no part in the injustices we have and will continue to see under a Trump presidency..

✨IT’S THAT TIME, Y’ALL✨ Election season is in FULL swing and it’s time to make your voice heard. The presidential election is such a HUGE deal! It determines the trajectory of our country for the next 4 years, so make a plan and get out there and cast your votes! This year we are voting for so much more than ourselves! We are voting for the protection and rights of others, so please do your research and make the best choice for you.

✨FREE CHILDBIRTH ED CLASS✨ My second CBE class is being held at a local library tomorrow (Sept 7) at 2:00! We’d love to have you there to talk all about our bodies, how they work when birthing our babies, how to advocate for ourselves/our partners, and how to navigate the postpartum period! This class is free to the community and definitely worth your while! 🥰✨See you then!✨❤️

✨My first community Childbirth Ed class is in the books!✨ Although we didn’t have a huge turn out (thanks a lot Labor Day weekend😅), it was so fun to be able to engage with some new people and some familiar faces! ✨IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR!✨ And it really was! I had a TIME at the It’s A Family Affair, Health & Wellness Day! I saw all my favorite humans from our community and got to connect with some amazing new ones too! Thank you so much for Sierra for having us all out here together to celebrate Black Breastfeeding week! It was such a safe space to learn and connect with great resources that help our community thrive!❤️🥰
