An eight-year-old girl, Donnalee Oerson, slipped into a deeper section of water and was pulled out by her friends.

But something was wrong.

She wasn’t responding.

As panic set in, nearby teenagers rushed over — Waylan Malan, Gabriel Filander, Keanen Jansen, and Wesley Storm.

They didn’t hesitate.

Years earlier, they had attended a water safety session by the National Sea Rescue Institute.

In that moment, they remembered.

They began CPR — taking turns, just like they had been taught.

Seconds passed. Then minutes.

Then, a change.

Donnalee started coughing… and breathing.

By the time paramedics arrived, her breathing had been restored — stabilized before professional help even reached the scene.

What they learned once in a classroom became something far more important.

Because when the moment came, they didn’t freeze.

They acted.

A training session in New Jersey suddenly turned into a life-or-death moment.

JJ Machnik collapsed during practice after a sudden cardiac event, leaving everyone around him in shock.

But two teammates didn’t freeze.

Giovanni Scafidi and Trevor Hodgins reacted instantly.

They had learned CPR years earlier — not knowing if they’d ever need it.

That moment came.

They pulled JJ off the treadmill and began compressions, taking turns and staying focused as seconds stretched into minutes.

There was no pause.

No hesitation.

For nearly five minutes, they continued CPR until first responders arrived.

Doctors later confirmed their actions likely saved his life.

JJ was taken to the hospital and eventually recovered, even graduating just weeks later.

What made the difference wasn’t strength or experience.

It was preparation… and the decision to act.

Learn CPR, Save a life!

The incident happened during the Presque Isle Half Marathon in Erie, where 65-year-old Greg Woodman was running alongside hundreds of participants. Just a few miles into the race, he began to feel unwell and moved toward the side of the course.

Moments later, he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. He was unconscious and had no pulse, turning the race into an emergency within seconds. Nearby runners quickly realized what had happened and stepped in without hesitation.

Among them were trained medical professionals, including a nurse and a nursing intern, who immediately began CPR. Others joined in, taking turns performing chest compressions in short intervals to keep blood circulating. At the same time, runners called for help, cleared space, and directed responders to the scene.

For several minutes, the group continued CPR until emergency crews arrived. They used a defibrillator to restore a normal heart rhythm, and Greg’s pulse returned before he was transported to the hospital.

Doctors later identified blocked arteries as the cause and treated him successfully. He recovered without lasting damage, something credited to the immediate response of those around him.

What started as a race became a coordinated effort where strangers worked together to keep one man alive until help arrived.
