Finding the right fit therapist
The process of starting therapy is an intimidating task for most. It can be difficult to figure out where to start and how to choose the therapist that is the right fit for you. There are many online therapy directories that you could start with; such as Psychology Today and Mental Health Match. My personal favorite way to search things is to google whatever it is plus the words “near me,” i.e. “therapist near me.” But how do you know out of all of the results that you will find, which therapist is the one to select? The truth is, you won’t know for sure which person will work best for you until you meet them. Of course, you can check out their website, read what they specialize in, and hope that if feels comfortable when you have a session. However, it could take a couple of tries before you find the therapist that you would want to stick with. There is no shame in shopping around for the therapist that is right for you. Asking questions about treatment methods and therapeutic styles is a good place to start. Figuring out what is important to you about the therapy relationship and checking to see if that aligns is another important thing to factor. Therapy is difficult enough, don’t make it more difficult by sticking with a therapist that you don’t want to open up to. As a therapist, I understand that I won’t be the best fit for every client and it is part of my job to help them find a therapist that will be.

Who goes to therapy?
The stigma of therapy stops many people from going. I often get asked about the severity of my clients and whether they can interact in every day life. To this I ask, who do you think goes to therapy? Somehow people have gotten this misconception that only the most “severe” people seek out mental health help. That couldn’t be further from the truth. The clients that I typically see in private practice are regular, every day people who could be your neighbors, teachers, and friends. Most therapists go to therapy; I’ve gone to therapy. The typical private practice client leads a functional life; many with jobs, families, and a social life. Most people that I see come to therapy because they want to develop healthier relationships, improve their communication skills, manage their time better, cope with stress, and other typical human struggles. Of course, there are people with more serious things going on such as psychosis or personality disorders, but those are the mental health struggles that so easily come to mind when you think about therapy. Many people will say that “those people” should definitely seek help without even questioning whether they need help too. There’s no threshold to meet to qualify for getting your mental health needs met. Don’t look at the next person and think, “They’re struggling so much more than me. That’s who should be in therapy.” I often tell clients that it’s not a competition and downplaying your issues won’t make the next person’s be more relevant. If you ask me who goes to therapy, I’ll say anyone that has something to talk about. It could be anything. And if you find yourself in my office and you don’t have anything to talk about, I’ll ask you questions until we come up with something.
