A beautiful birth story during a pandemic

Preparing to deliver your first baby during a pandemic is petrifying. For one, you already have no idea what to expect or when to expect it and the idea of things rapidly changing at hospitals and how it may impact your delivery adds to the that anxiety.
One thing put me at ease, Advocate hospitals were allowing both support person and doula in the labor and delivery room. Everything would be ok at Lutheran General Hospital.
Front row parking and a ghost town allowed for a quick screening and collection of masks. It was eerily empty as we walked thru what would have been the waiting room where all of our family would have been, anticipating baby’s arrival.
We were taken to labor and delivery in our masks. Every wonderful nurse that came in was guarded, shielded, or depending on how you look at it - exposed in a mask. I saw right through them into the helpful, selfless people that they are. They comforted us and made sure we had what we needed.
My Doula, Nicki, arrived around 6pm. She helped me in different positions, massaged my lower back and hips for 7 hours straight every time I had a contraction and guided us to our baby. Her and my husband had a secret eye language they used above their masks to ensure I was getting what I needed and to ensure they were on the same page; and a few laughs exchanged here and there. My husband and I cannot get over how much of a support she was for the both of us.
It was my original plan to try and forgo the epidural. I wasn’t against it but thought I would attempt to have my baby au naturale. Throughout active labor, Nicki reassured me I was progressing saying “you got this. You can do it without!”
Doctor and resident were in full gear head to toe- masks and plastic shields. 2 hours later we welcomed our little boy.
We went skim to skin right away and within a few minutes Nicki helped baby latch and he ate for a good while!
As different and scary as it was delivering a baby during a pandemic, I wouldn’t change a thing. It was hard to not share this experience with our family and friends and have visitors at the hospital, it’s disappointing we don’t have professional photos of our baby in those first couple of days and it was challenging to not have access to the nursery for a second night, but it was our experience, and from it, we got to bring our baby boy home a week early!
