“This is it. I will no longer give a treatment that doesn’t work to a person who needs help.”

Driven by the struggles of patients experiencing miscarriage, Courtney Schreiber, MD, MPH, chief of family planning in Obstetrics and Gynecology, has led research that transformed national and international guidelines. The PEACE clinic she established in 2017 is now a national model to improve care for early pregnancy loss and complications.

For these achievements, she was awarded the 2026 BioInnovation Institute (BII) & Science Magazine Translational Medicine Prize for Innovations in Women’s Health.

As the new Penn Medicine Princeton Cancer Center, scheduled to open in May 2028, takes shape, so too does a bold vision where advanced cancer treatment and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.

The center is designed with green roofs to cool the building naturally, rain gardens to filter water back into the earth, and solar energy powering the future of healing.

But the real transformation? Creating a space that feels less like a hospital and more like a place of peace, with natural light, thoughtful design, and a deep connection to the surrounding environment all playing important roles.

“We set a core set of principles for ourselves before starting this cancer center project,” said James Demetriades, Princeton Health CEO. “LEED Gold certification has been our guiding framework, because it creates a healthier building for patients and staff, and integrates well into our other sustainability efforts here at Princeton Medical Center.”

We are incredibly proud to announce that Penn Medicine’s Jean Bennett, MD, PhD, and Albert Maguire, MD, along with Katherine High, MD, of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, have been awarded the prestigious Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, widely dubbed the "Oscars of Science".

Decades ago, treating inherited blindness was the stuff of science fiction. But this team persisted, developing the first-ever FDA-approved gene therapy for an inherited condition. Their work hasn't just restored sight for patients with genetic blindness; it blazed a trail for over 140 clinical trials targeting vision loss for millions.

Please join us in celebrating these visionaries who proved that with resilience and imagination, the "impossible" is within reach.

This Earth Day, we're unveiling our plan to roll out paper prescription bottles system-wide, just one step in our Sustainability Action Plan to reduce our environmental impact.

In 2024, we announced our goal of becoming the nation's most environmentally-friendly health care organization, aiming to halve our carbon emissions by 2030, and eliminate them by 2042. We remain as committed as ever to this pursuit, and are excited to reach yet another milestone in this journey.

Supporting the health and well-being of healthcare workers has a powerful ripple effect, strengthening both staff experience and patient care.

At Penn Medicine Princeton Health, Clinician Well-being coordinator Ellen Winkle, MSN, is helping bring that vision to life through a new wellness initiative supported by a Princeton Medical Center Foundation Innovation grant.

Each month, Wellness Recharge Pop-Ups bring moments of calm directly to nursing units—massage, aromatherapy, and holistic care included. And they don’t just happen during the day. These experiences reach staff even during overnight shifts, meeting caregivers when and where they are.

“Seeing colleagues pause to breathe and feel cared for fills my heart,” Ellen shared. “Everyone deserves that moment.”

When her mother needed a kidney transplant, Jen Brady became her living donor. Jen, who works as Penn Medicine’s director of benefits and well-being, used the health system’s living donor paid leave benefit to recover safely. Then, she began training for the 2026 Boston Marathon.

“You can do this selfless thing, and can take care of the people you love, and still pursue your goals to be the person you want to be,” she says.

Go, Jen! 💙💛

Rebecca Boswell, PhD, director of the Princeton Center for Eating Disorders and administrative director of Psychiatric Services at Princeton Medical Center, believes the best care starts by listening to patients. That belief came to life through the experience of Maya Noah.

When Maya arrived for treatment, she was desperately in need of care and struggled to adjust to the hospital-based setting because of her sensitivity to cold, bright lights, noise, and crowds. Through writing, she found her voice and clearly expressed what she needed to feel safe. The care team responded quickly moving her to a quieter room, softening the environment, and making thoughtful accommodations that supported her healing.

Recognizing the power of Maya’s insight, Dr. Boswell invited her to contribute to research on neurodivergent-informed eating disorder care. Maya’s advocacy also inspired The Maya Closet, a sensory space stocked with tools to lower stress and anxiety, including weighted blankets, white noise machines, dimmable lamps, earplugs, sleep masks, neck warmers, and cozy socks, helping patients feel regulated and supported so they can focus on treatment.

In honor of World Doula Week, we had the privilege of welcoming local doulas for an evening centered on connection, collaboration, and shared purpose.

The night brought together passionate professionals dedicated to supporting families through every stage of pregnancy and postpartum. We were grateful to learn from physical therapists Fatima Shah and Shalay Foster, from our Center for Pelvic Wellness, who shared insights on the important role physical therapy plays in maternal care.

From meaningful conversations over light refreshments to connecting with our Maternal Child Health team, the evening was a reminder of how powerful partnership can be. Guests also joined us for a guided tour of our Maternal Child Health Units, offering a closer look at the birth experience at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center.

Thank you to the incredible doulas who joined us. We’re so grateful to be part of a community that shows up for families in such impactful ways.

Photographed are members of Community Wellness certified childbirth educators, Center for Pelvic Wellness therapists, nurses from Labor & Delivery and the Physiological Birth team, and community doulas.

On a recent visit to Plainsboro Preserve, Ria Benerofe from Penn Medicine Princeton Health’s Community Wellness team connected with Melissa Arouh, building attendant, with Plainsboro Preserve, to map out the details for our 3rd Annual Self-Care Retreat on April 26. What might look like simple planning is really the result of years of trust, collaboration, and shared purpose.

Ria has played a huge role in growing this partnership over time and it shows. From thoughtful event planning to meaningful community connection, this work is rooted in care for both people and place.

We’re incredibly grateful for this partnership and all the possibilities it provides. It’s because of relationships like this that meaningful moments and meaningful impact can happen.

“We have a duty to understand the unique stressors of first responders and provide compassionate, specialized care,” said Anatoliy Yanovskiy, MD, medical director of Penn Medicine Princeton House Behavioral Health Inpatient Services.

Driven by compassion and a deep understanding of those who serve on the front lines, Dr. Yanovskiy helped launch New Jersey’s first mental health and substance use program dedicated to first responders. A milestone that continues to impact lives every day.

Built with intention, the program is staffed by licensed clinicians and certified peer support specialists with expertise in trauma treatment.

Dr. Yanovskiy’s leadership goes far beyond innovation. He is known for showing up fully for patients and families, setting a standard defined by integrity, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

We're so grateful for his vision, his leadership, and his relentless dedication to those who dedicate their lives to others.

As part of Penn Medicine Princeton Health's ongoing partnership with the State of New Jersey and the Children’s Home Society of NJ, we recently hosted a Basic Life Saving CPR training designed to equip doulas and doulas-in-training with the skills they need to support families in critical moments.

These sessions have already brought together so many dedicated individuals, all committed to going above and beyond for the families they serve. Seeing them learn, practice, and grow together was nothing short of inspiring.

A special thank you to our incredible instructors, Geoff Maurer and Heather Comisky (pictured far right), for leading the training and sharing their expertise with such care and enthusiasm.

We’re proud to support these professionals who are making a difference for families in our community before, during, and after childbirth.
