When Patricia Feitl was admitted to the ICU at Penn Medicine Princeton Health with a life-threatening cellulitis infection caused by untreated stage 3 lymphedema, her future felt uncertain. Months later, she began working with Chrysanne Karnick, an occupational therapist and a certified lymphedema therapist who became a key partner in her recovery.

At first Patricia was homebound and using a wheelchair. Through complete decongestive therapy, including manual drainage, compression, exercise, and education, the swelling in her legs decreased significantly. Today, she’s using a walker, caring for her daily needs, visiting her daughter’s home, and cheering on her grandson at swim meets and school concerts.

Even after a hospitalization setback she kept pushing forward, continuing outpatient physical therapy to build strength and balance, and working with Chrysanne to further reduce her swelling. We're so grateful for partnerships like this that bring hope and healing to our patients.

At Penn Medicine Princeton Health, caring for the community starts by caring for the people who show up every day to serve it. Through Project Thrive, employees facing challenges with food, housing, or transportation receive meaningful support, including weekly CSA Farm Share boxes filled with fresh, locally grown produce. One employee shared that the program not only helped make ends meet, but that her son eagerly waited each week to see what was in the bag.

“If basic needs are not being met, it’s hard to focus on how you can become your best self,” said Winter Wiggins (right), employee program specialist. “We want employees to be well. It’s a ripple effect. When we support our staff, we support our entire system.”

The night Shiloh was born didn’t go as planned. Instead of heading home, her first days were spent in the NICU at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center.

For two of those nights, NICU nurse Hannah Steen was by her side. With more than seven years of NICU experience, Hannah provided expert clinical care, hands-on breastfeeding support, and the reassurance Shiloh’s family needed to feel confident bringing their baby home. Before discharge, Shiloh’s mom asked for a photo, a simple way to say thank you. “I really knew my baby was in the best hands,” she shared.

Hannah, thank you for your expertise, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the families you serve.

For the past 15 years, Ashley Palminsano completed the BLS (Basic Life Support) course as part of her professional requirements at Penn Medicine Princeton Health, first as a team member in Surgical Services, and currently as manager of Pelvic Wellness.

Ashley has used this important training throughout her career, responding to in-hospital emergencies, including Code Blue situations. What she didn't expect was just how often those skills would be called into action in her personal life.

During a recent BLS training, Ashley (right) shared with Deb Millar, director of Community Health and Engagement, how she has stepped into help during medical emergencies in the community, including assisting a choking child.

Her story is a powerful reminder that CPR and AED training isn't just a certification. It's the confidence and readiness to act anytime, anywhere.

We're proud of team members like Ashley who carry their training with them wherever they go.

Love showed up in a very meaningful way at Penn Medicine Princeton House Behavioral Health this Valentine’s Day. Our patients so appreciated heartfelt cards filled with messages of love, joy, and encouragement, created by thoughtful students and staff at The College of New Jersey.

“Our patients are incredibly grateful and look forward to receiving these words of encouragement,” shared Yuko Martin, director of Allied Clinical Therapies. “You can see the joy on their faces as they read each message, knowing someone truly cares about their recovery. It makes a difference.”

A simple card can be a powerful reminder that no one walks the journey alone. Thank you to The College of New Jersey!

Collectively, their service to Penn Medicine Princeton Health totals more than 200 years. Four employees—primary care nurse Kathy McGurrin, LPN, assistant cook Rose Baylor, operating room assistant Joseph Pacius, and medical receptionist Theresa Shea—recently celebrated their 50th work anniversaries.

Joseph began his career folding linen and went on to spend decades supporting the operating room and training generations of OR assistants. Kathy started as a teenage waitress in the hospital café and followed her calling into nursing, dedicating her career to hands-on patient care. Theresa “Tess” grew from a junior secretary into a vital link in pre-admission testing, helping ensure smooth, timely care for surgical patients. Rose joined the cafeteria fresh out of high school and became a skilled assistant cook, nourishing patients, staff, and lasting friendships along the way.

“Fifty years of service is an extraordinary achievement,” said Penn Medicine Princeton Health CEO James Demetriades. “Their dedication enhances the lives of our patients and strengthens the communities we serve.”

What’s kept them here? Co-workers who feel like family, leaders who mentor and inspire, and the pride of making a difference day after day, decade after decade.

Here’s to 50 years of care, connection, and heart. Congratulations Kathy, Rose, Joseph, and Theresa!

Penn Medicine researchers want to turn walking into a game that saves lives. A new trial, backed by a $25 million award, will test a smartphone approach that turns steps into points, levels, and reminders for 18,000 adults nationwide. The goal is to make moving more fun and care simpler, so fewer people face heart attacks, strokes, and other serious conditions.

Cardiologist Alexander C. Fanaroff, MD, says "the results have the potential to transform cardiovascular prevention guidelines, reduce mortality, improve quality of life, and dramatically lower healthcare costs."

When cancer strikes, the deepest wounds often aren't physical. The Psychosocial Oncology Clinic at Princeton Health is redefining care, offering patients and caregivers free, specialized mental health support alongside medical treatment. “We talk about precision oncology, meaning, get the right drug to the right patient at the right time. This is trying to get the right support to the right patient and the right way,” said Ramy Sedhom, MD (center), clinic co-leader with Rebecca Boswell, PhD (right).

Funded with a $2.6 million gift, the program is expected to expand to additional sites in 2026. "It’s important everywhere,” said Abramson Cancer Center Director Robert H. Vonderheide, MD, DPhil. “What good is it if we treat a patient and cure them of breast cancer, only to have them emerge with a cancer-induced depression?” It's a model that's changing lives—and the standard of care.

When Joan Gilliard first walked through the doors of Penn Medicine Princeton Health in January 1965, she couldn’t have known she was beginning a journey that would span six decades and touch generations of colleagues along the way.

For 60 faithful years, Joan showed up. Every day. Including during the most challenging days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when she never missed a single shift. Her dedication became a constant our hospital family could count on, and her kindness made her a familiar, comforting face throughout Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center.

To celebrate her retirement, Joan was comemorated with a heartfelt clap out surrounded by colleagues who know her not just as an enviornmental services (EVS) senior secretary, but as family. Well respected, deeply connected, and admired by all, Joan’s impact reaches far beyond her role.

EVS Director Larry Garcia shared a moment that says it all:

“When I asked Mrs. Joan who her best EVS director was in all her 60 years, she said, my first—the one who gave me my first job. I told her how proud I was to be her last director, seeing her off to her next amazing venture.”

Thank you, Mrs. Joan, for 60 years of unwavering service, loyalty, and heart. Your legacy will always be part of Penn Medicine Princeton Health.

Dr. Nisha Giyanani, a cardiologist with Penn Cardiology Hillsborough, is passionate about women's heart health. She reminds her patients that heart disease remains the #1 health threat in women—often presenting differently than in men—making awareness and prevention critical.

“Because women have atypical symptoms, screening and prevention is key for heart health,” she said. “Seeing a cardiologist on a regular basis can help identify risk factors and problems ahead of time," she added, noting the importance of establishing a good relationship with your doctor.

Thank you, Dr. Giyanani, for your commitment to our patients and community.
