Holidays can be a challenging time . Interpersonal issues , loneliness and the stress needs to be acknowledged. Please call your crisis hot line if you have suicidal ideation or find it difficult to cope and need someone to talk to immediately. You need to reach out to your therapist or your psychiatrist if you have negative thoughts , feel isolated and overwhelmed. Holidays are difficult because families meet and dysfunctional patterns surface . Interpersonal issues exacerbate the depressive and anxiety disorders which are biopsychosocial in nature . Therapy and medication is very helpful but you need to reach out and get the assistance and support .

Thanksgiving and the holidays can be a very stressful time . The TV , media and the portrayal of happy family reunions make it very difficult for those struggling with despair , depression , psychoses and polysubstance abuse . These biopsychosocial disorders can make the individual suffer from poor work performance often leading to disability and absenteeism. Relationships can be very taxing and chaotic . Holidays are not what they seem on television and this further makes the individual feel very alone . Please call your psychotherapist or psychiatrist if you feel the need to talk to someone at this time .

Happy Veterans Day to all those who have served in the US Army . It has been a true honor to serve you at the Lyons VA , at Rutgers Community mental health center and in my private office . Your sacrifices , patriotism and the emotional price you paid for serving this nation will never be forgotten . WW 11 and Vietnam Veterans are the ones I have had the privilege of treating . Thank you .

When one is unable to cope socially , in one’s occupation or feels a sense of despair there is help available. Please reach out to your physician and discuss the need for a referral for individual psychotherapy and if needed psychopharmacological consultation. Mental illness is stigmatized and often the deductibles are high with higher copayments . These are barriers to seeking care . If not dealt with the long term consequences on the family can be devastating . Alcohol and poly substance abuse and dependence needs attention . Shame and anger can often interfere when one needs to tackle these sensitive issues with a loved one . Denial and not accepting the identified problem are often the issue . The negative impact on the family can be longstanding so one needs to reach out in a timely fashion . Psychological issues are not easy to face but individual and family therapy can be very helpful .

Visual art , music , horticulture , exercise , yoga and meditation are all helpful combined with balanced diet for mental health . These programs have been incorporated into psychiatric treatment plans with patients suffering from persistent , serious chronic mental illnesses for decades . Individual psychotherapy is very helpful to understand issues with relationships , struggles with coworkers , interpersonal conflicts and social maladjustment . Psychopharmacology when combined with individual psychotherapy can benefit those with mood disorders , psychoses , emotional dysregulation , anxiety and depressive disorders .

Healthy ageing involves keeping physical activity , social connectedness , minimal alcohol consumption , engaging in purposeful activities like volunteering and identifying hobbies . Yoga Tai Chi Meditation can relieve chronic stress . Sleep is important and avoid daytime napping . Consult a physician if you have anxiety or depression. Control the weight , Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension . Eat healthy foods and learn a new language , skill , new subject or musical instrument. Practice the art of forgiveness and do not hold grudges and ruminate on the past . Grow spiritually and have a sense of humor . Declutter your life and seek help if you are unable to organize your life . Seek professional help if needed .

Each social interaction that you encounter remember that just as you are healing the other person is healing also . Forgive and try not to hold on to grudges , see the positive traits and learn to appreciate the good in others . This will help your world be a better place . Find your own goals and climb your own mountains . Find creative outlets and work peacefully with others respecting personal space .
