People don’t forget. They move on, and they forgive. They understand, and they brush some things off, and sure, some people don’t appreciate it like they probably should, but people don’t forget the ones who showed up for them.
They don’t.
They don’t forget the ones who dropped off warm meals and casseroles and delivery pizzas when their family was sick, and they don’t forget the ones who texted to check in on them day after day after day. They don’t forget the ones who let them grieve when a loved one passed away, and they definitely don’t forget the ones who gave them grace while they braved their way through an anxiety storm.
They don’t forget kind words, and they don’t forget good deeds. They don’t forget the gifts of compassion, and love, and time. Time...that’s a big one.
They don’t forget loyalty, and dependability. They don’t forget consistency.
They don’t forget the ones who carried their burdens, and the ones who made them laugh when nobody else could. They don’t forget the ones who rallied, and the ones who invited them out, and the ones who sent flowers, and cards, and homemade notes.
They don’t forget the ones who cheered with them when they won, and they don’t forget the ones who still believed in them when they lost. They don’t forget the ones who stayed.
All those little things—those tiny little acts of care and support—they mean something. Brick by brick, they build deep relationships, and they become anchors of trust and security.
When someone’s world gets a little dark, throw back the curtains and bring in some light. We need each other. We’ve always needed each other, but it means something more than it did before.
This time, maybe it was them who needed to be carried a little, but next time, maybe it will be you, and I promise that when it is, they won’t forget.
Love,
Amy
