ℹ️🌿 PERFECTIONISM AND TRAUMA: 5 WAYS PERFECTIONISM IS GETTING IN THE WAY OF HEALING (AND WHAT TO DO INSTEAD) |

Perfectionism isn’t about having high standards or wanting to do well. Perfectionist traits often develop in response to such environments, where children may strive for extremely high standards to gain approval and external validation.

It’s about a part of you that learned: If I do everything right, maybe I’ll be safe. Maybe I’ll be loved. Maybe I won’t be abandoned. That being perfect is the only way to avoid harm, rejection, or shame.

Perfectionism often functions as a protector part. It manages risk, prevents vulnerability, and tries to keep old wounds from being touched. Deep feelings of shame, guilt, or worthlessness can drive the need for perfection.

People don’t forget. They move on, and they forgive. They understand, and they brush some things off, and sure, some people don’t appreciate it like they probably should, but people don’t forget the ones who showed up for them.

They don’t.

They don’t forget the ones who dropped off warm meals and casseroles and delivery pizzas when their family was sick, and they don’t forget the ones who texted to check in on them day after day after day. They don’t forget the ones who let them grieve when a loved one passed away, and they definitely don’t forget the ones who gave them grace while they braved their way through an anxiety storm.
They don’t forget kind words, and they don’t forget good deeds. They don’t forget the gifts of compassion, and love, and time. Time...that’s a big one.

They don’t forget loyalty, and dependability. They don’t forget consistency.

They don’t forget the ones who carried their burdens, and the ones who made them laugh when nobody else could. They don’t forget the ones who rallied, and the ones who invited them out, and the ones who sent flowers, and cards, and homemade notes.

They don’t forget the ones who cheered with them when they won, and they don’t forget the ones who still believed in them when they lost. They don’t forget the ones who stayed.

All those little things—those tiny little acts of care and support—they mean something. Brick by brick, they build deep relationships, and they become anchors of trust and security.

When someone’s world gets a little dark, throw back the curtains and bring in some light. We need each other. We’ve always needed each other, but it means something more than it did before.

This time, maybe it was them who needed to be carried a little, but next time, maybe it will be you, and I promise that when it is, they won’t forget.

Love,
Amy

Let me assure you, I will unapologetically remove myself from any table that doesn’t have a “come sit with us” vibe.

We’re too old for the mean girl stuff, and we’ve all been the one rejected before. We’ve all been the one left out and we’ve all been the one who was the topic of conversation when we weren’t there to defend ourselves, and it hurt us deeply.
I know I’ll say the wrong things sometimes, and I know I’ll mess up and act out of character on occasion. I’m a mess of a human and I realize that but I refuse to knowingly inflict pain on another human being at this point in my life.

I’d rather sit alone.

Love,
Amy

Our hearts are heavy as we witness the devastating impact of the recent flooding in Kerrville and at Camp Mystic. We want to extend our deepest prayers and support to all those who have been affected—campers, families, staff, and the entire community.

To everyone touched by this tragedy—our prayers are with you. May you find strength, comfort, and hope in the midst of uncertainty. And may the road to healing be paved with grace, love, and support from those around you.

As a counseling agency, we understand how overwhelming and disorienting times like these can be. Please know that you are not alone. We are here to walk alongside you in the days ahead, offering a listening ear, a safe space, and compassionate care for those who are grieving, processing trauma, or simply trying to make sense of the loss. If you or someone you know needs support during this time, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
