This past Thursday, the Queens Chamber of Commerce hosted its 2025 Building Awards Gala, honoring a number of exceptional building projects within the borough. EW Howell Construction Group was in attendance to accept the award for New Construction – Public Buildings, which was awarded for the Far Rockaway Library.

We’d like to acknowledge John Chester, Project Manager, and Jon DiBiase, Executive Vice President at EW Howell, for their attendance at this celebratory event. Additionally, we extend our gratitude to Snøhetta, in addition to our subcontractors and partners, for their contributions to making this award possible!

In 2004, EW Howell Construction Group completed the East Moriches Elementary School project. This 73,000-square-foot, single-story school features a gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium, classrooms, and staff offices, in addition to a paved courtyard, playground, and multi-purpose ball field.

Designed by BBS Architects, Landscape Architects & Engineers, the school’s exterior façade boasts a cultured stone wainscot and a roof adorned with cupolas. We extend our thanks to East Moriches Union Free School District, BBS Arch, and our many subcontractors and partners for their invaluable contributions to this education project.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, EW Howell Construction Group is proud to participate in this year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. It’s estimated that 316,950 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year. However, with advances in early detection and treatment methods, there is hope. This walk aims to support vital breast cancer research and provide resources for those in need. This year’s walk will take place on October 19 at Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh, NY, with a rolling start time of 7:00 AM. Details of where to meet will become available as the day gets closer.

A notable example is the Interdisciplinary Science Building for Brookhaven National Laboratory, which we completed in 2013. This 87,000-square-foot, 2-story research facility features nearly 60 laboratories, with researchers addressing significant energy challenges. The ISB achieved LEED Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, incorporating various green elements such as:

✅ Reduced use of potable water
✅ Environmentally sustainable wood
✅ High-efficiency lighting systems
✅ Materials from local vendors, reducing the building’s carbon footprint

In 1911, EW Howell Construction Group built the Babylon Library in the heart of Babylon Village. The building was designed in the Neo-Classical Revival style, emphasizing simplicity and balance. In 1964, we completed a rear addition to the building. The library remained in this location until 1968, when it was moved to a larger site on South Carll Avenue, where it exists to this day.

The old library building now houses the Village of Babylon Historical & Preservation Society, which serves as a local history museum. Additionally, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015, further underscoring its significance to the village and its rich legacy.
