How can we offer helpful hope to families of kids who stutter and adults?

So many parents are calling me in tears—hearing from SLPs that they should just “accept stuttering”—and this is happening for children as young as 5, all the way up to age 19.

I lead support groups for adults and parents. They need guidance. They need encouragement.

As a parent of an adult with ADHD and dyslexia, I’ve lived through years of educational negativity.

Thankfully, my daughter made it through school and is now a bright, articulate young adult—working, thriving, and confident. But let me be clear: many so-called “educated professionals” (and I use that term loosely in her case) lumped her into categories and dismissed her potential.

What changed that?

Hope. Support. Advocacy. And a refusal to let their words define her.

Those years were hard—as both a parent and an SLP—but I want to share what helped us, and what I now pass on to others to help restore faith in the future.

🔹 Read and learn about the many evidence-based approaches to stuttering
🔹 Listen to my podcast—filled with real stories and practical knowledge
🔹 Encourage often
🔹 Listen deeply
🔹 Praise effort over outcome
🔹 Know your limits—learn and refer when needed. You might change someone’s life.
🔹 Be cautious with social media—misinformation spreads fast

There is hope. Let’s be the ones who speak it into existence.

How do you offer hope?

What makes my private stuttering therapy sessions different?

1️⃣ I get it—because I live it. I’ve stuttered most of my life. I know the fear of introductions and the sting of avoiding conversations. I bring lived experience and compassion to every session.
2️⃣ This isn’t general speech therapy. Stuttering is my specialty—not a side focus. Every session is tailored to yourgoals, whether you’re 4 or 44.
3️⃣ We practice the real-life situations. From ordering coffee to job interviews, we rehearse everyday situations so you can speak with more ease out there, not just in therapy.
4️⃣ It’s therapy + coaching + mindset. We combine fluency techniques with confidence-building strategies to help you speak up even when it’s hard.
5️⃣ Families are included. If your child stutters, you’ll be part of the journey. I make sure you feel supported, informed, and empowered.
6️⃣ My story shows it’s possible. I went from hiding my stutter to becoming a speech therapist. It’s never too late to be heard.

In group therapy, confidentiality is key. What is said in the group stays in the group. This is a safe place for you to open up and share your thoughts and feelings without judgment from others because each member there is going through the same thing. This is true for stuttering and fluency groups as well. There are many benefits to group therapy:

A Safe Place to Talk

In group therapy, confidentiality is key. What is said in the group stays in the group. This is a safe place for you to open up and share your thoughts and feelings without judgment from others because each member there is going through the same thing. This is true for stuttering and fluency groups as well.

Decrease Isolation

Isolation with stuttering happens when you feel alone. When you’re feeling isolated, it’s easy to want to stay home and not see anyone. Group therapy can help reduce that isolation by providing a support system outside of your family and friends. If you stutter and join a group you are not alone.

Build Confidence

The more you participate in group therapy, the more confidence you will have not only in sharing your story but also in hearing the stories of others. In time, you will develop trust not only in the group members but also in the therapists. Stuttering is challenging. You need help using fluency skills.

Friendship

You’re not alone. When you walk into a group therapy session with people who stutter or adults who stutter, you will meet others who are struggling with similar issues. It can be very comforting to know that you are not the only one going through what you are experiencing.

Let’s bust some myths about stuttering!

Hi I am wondering if some of you can help. As many of you know I am a speech pathologist who also stutters. I have a few adults who stutter who have inspirational stories. They want to tell their stories, spread stuttering awareness and talk about communication.
Do you think a zoom would be better to try and invite parents and professionals or an in person event. This has become harder lately, tk you in advance.
I am in city a few times a month so was thinking the city too. I can start with LI. tks
Any advice is appreciated. Lori
