A proactive approach means understanding what a behavior means (function) — not just what it looks like (topography). Culture gives us that context. A culturally competent response begins before crisis. What you see as noncompliance may be a culturally shaped coping strategy. Knowing a person's cultural values may help us shape our responses to the behavior that is occurring.

Highland Pines School, a center-based school within the Tuscola Intermediate School District (TISD) in Michigan, successfully implemented the Safety-Care behavioral crisis prevention program in 2016. Since then, they have seen a decrease in referrals for restraint and seclusion and in the number of staff members making those referrals. Our latest blog examines how the school transformed its approach from reactive behavioral management to proactive de-escalation, resulting in significant improvements in student behavior and staff safety.

"Being a mom to an autistic child has fundamentally changed the way I practice as a BCBA. It’s made me more flexible, more human. I’ve learned that sometimes, the textbook strategies need to be tossed aside in favor of what actually works for the child in front of me. I’ve learned to prioritize connection before correction. And I now ask myself one simple question when writing goals or coaching staff: Would I want this for my own child? That question has become my compass."

Jennifer Gormley, BCBA, LBS, IBA and certified Safety-Care Trainer, shares how her roles as both a mom to a young adult with autism and a board certified behavior analyst have shaped one another. Read her full story here: https://hubs.li/Q03r_ycZ0

"ABA isn't inherently traumatic. But it can be when misapplied...when it centers control over consent, or compliance over connection."

Our Master Trainer, Jessica Arriaga, shares her thoughts on where ABA has the potential to contribute to trauma and how practitioners can reshape the future of behavior support to prioritize dignity and autonomy. Read her full blog here: https://hubs.ly/Q03tlyj70
