Today on National Child Grief Awareness Day, I finished up a month long marathon of presenting about child and teen grief. Why do I present so much on top of working with children and teens who are grieving? This is what I know to be true:
💙In our community, so many children and families carry grief. 1 in 13 children in Texas will lose a parent or sibling before age 18, and that number doubles by age 25. This doesn’t even include the loss of grandparents, stepfamily members, friends, or other significant people in their lives.
💙 Kids and teens of all ages feel the impact of a death loss. They experience grief feelings, physical symptoms, and intense worries and fears.
💙They need their adults around them to help them with by listening to their feelings and not dismissing their grief. They need help developing coping skills. They need you to say their person’s name and not forget their person was important. This can be any adult, not just trained mental health professionals.
I want everyone to know about child and teen grief because over 6.4 million children in the US will experience the death of just a parent or sibling. This will stay with them their entire life. Let’s help them with protective factors, because grief can become a public health issue if we don’t offer them coping skills, a caring community, and resources for their adults to be consistent caregivers.
