I stand for hope, inclusion, empowerment, and change. I stand for BIPOC Mental Wellness.

At Dr. J Therapy, we are dedicated to combating the stigma surrounding mental health, especially within communities of color.

Mental health challenges affect a significant portion of the US population, impacting more than one in five adults. While these difficulties are often manageable and even preventable, not everyone has access to essential resources. Unfortunately, some racial and ethnic minority groups face greater obstacles in accessing mental health care. Recent research conducted by the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry highlights that the Black community is 20% more likely to experience significant mental health issues such as Major Depressive Disorder or Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Furthermore, Black emerging young adults aged 18 to 25, also experience higher rates of mental health issues and tend to use mental health services less frequently compared to both White emerging adults and older Black adults.

These findings underscore a troubling pattern: despite ongoing efforts to address disparities in race and class in the US, inequalities in mental health care access and outcomes persist, and in some cases, worsen over time.

By donating generously to this cause, you're not only supporting NAMI's life-changing programs but also contributing to the efforts to better support individuals and families of color affected by mental health stigma. Dr. J Therapy aims to bridge the gap by providing culturally competent care and representation in mental health services. "Mental Wellness for All" is our rallying call, and it will take all of us to make a difference. Together, let's break down the barriers, raise awareness, and ensure that everyone, regardless of race or background, can access the support they need. Thank you for being a part of this vital movement.

The rising rates of su***de among Black men are cause for alarm. As these rates rise, the lack of attention and resources for Black men and boys to access mental healthcare becomes more and more apparent.

On May 1, 2024 at 2 p.m. ET, American Counseling Association CEO Shawn E. Boynes will join Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, Chair of the Caucus on the Commission on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys; Congressman Troy Carter; the Caucus on the Commission on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys; and other top mental health leaders as they host a Congressional Hearing titled, “Mayday: Su***de and the Mental Health of Black Men and Boys.”

This hearing will be livestreamed on Congresswoman Frederica Wilson’s social media pages. Tune in to hear these thought leaders discuss the urgent need for action.
