Several years ago, I learned about a treatment modality called NARM (Neuroaffective Relational Model) which is designed to heal developmental trauma. Traditional models (CBT for example) have their place in the therapy world, however they are often just a bandaid for the deeper issue. I started NARM training in January 2021 and after an intense 9 months, I’m excited to complete it this weekend.

This quote accurately describes what NARM is about. Childhood trauma results in heartbreak and we develop strategies to survive the loss of connection and attunement. As adults, these strategies prevent us from getting what we most want for ourselves. NARM helps us reconnect to ourselves and our deepest desires.

Next up: Master’s level NARM training which dives deeper into the personality spectrum. I’m excited to offer a newer modality for the treatment of complex trauma.

While I don’t care for the word “bad” to describe people, the message is here. I see many clients who have survived some type of abuse. When it’s emotional or verbal, I often get asked “what if I’m a narcissist?” If you’re asking yourself this question, the answer is “you aren’t.” People on the narcissism spectrum would never think to ask themselves this question. They also infrequently end up in therapy and when they do, there is generally a lot of resistance.

Someone is sexually assaulted every 73 seconds in America. It's on all of us to help build a culture of respect and dignity—a culture that says to sexual violence, in all its forms.

“Your task is not to seek love, but to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” - Rumi

I just completed my second weekend of training to learn the Neuroaffective Relational Model (NARM) for treating complex trauma. I am about halfway through the training and I’m looking forward to incorporating this in future sessions. This quote embodies what we do when using NARM.

Abuse isn’t just r**e and physical violence. As a result of the movement, more women are coming forward about their experiences. For context, a 2018 study found that 81% of women report sexual harassment and 27% of women report sexual assault. If you are experiencing any of the abuse listed in the diagram and need support, please reach out to a mental health professional.

People often ask “how long will I be in therapy?” It’s important to remember that we didn’t develop unhealthy patterns in one day and we won’t be able to improve them in one session.

There are plenty of things outside of our control at any given time and especially right now. Anxiety is normal. Managing our emotions is empowering and builds confidence. Distress tolerance skills help us tolerate uncomfortable emotions. One basic skill use is exercise/movement. Get outside everyday for a walk, run, bike ride, sport, etc. Both your body and mind will thank you.

Today is the start of recovery month. It’s a good time to examine your relationship with substances, both legal and illegal. Excessive use of substances, even alcohol and Ma*****na, can lead to worsening mental health issues.

It’s a common misconception that Ma*****na is a gateway drug to further substance use. That is an oversimplification. Research studies have found that trauma can be a precursor to substance use disorders. The Journal of Psychiatric Services found that up to 80% of women being treated for a substance use disorder reported a history of trauma, most commonly physical or sexual abuse.

“I’m not for everyone.” I say it to myself and bring authenticity into my work. Not everyone will enjoy your company and who you are at your core. If you’re in relationships and you hesitate to be authentic, it may be time to re-evaluate where you put your emotional energy.
