November is National Family Caregivers Month celebrated to honor over 63 million family caregivers across the nation and their home medical team.
Parents can be the primary means of a quality of life when a disability has taken away standards of living we had been accustomed to. According to the American Association Of Retired Persons in 2025, 23% of Texas adults are family caregivers. BindFW Members are thankful for their caregivers and their support. They help keep our schedules straight, create positivity, and manage day to day activities of living while allowing us the independence that we need to strive for in our recovery.

BindFW Members had their Friendsgiving Event at Main Event on Tuesday! Members had a blast eating great food and bowling. Friendsgiving is the time to be thankful for the friends you have. It’s exactly like Thanksgiving, but to celebrate our friendship. BindFW is thankful for our friends and families.

Veterans Day is observed nationally on November 11th to honor America’s armed service vets for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to sacrifice themselves for the good of others. American patriotism has made an indelible impression on the world in our unifying compassion, empathy, and understanding of the importance of liberty and the need for independence. Brain Injury Network would like to say Thank You for your service to our Veterans. Pictured is one of the members/veteran, Karl.

🧡From Concussion to Coach

Tanika Connesero with Alō Holistic Wellness is a brain injury survivor and health care coach whose personal journey emboldened her to assist family members. Multiple people in her family had TBIs and her mother had a stroke. We all have experienced those life challenges where our children get injured in sporting events or just falling in the shower. Do I need to seek medical advice? Do I just monitor them at home? Tanika, because of her concussions, was in a unique position to identify the TBI signs, navigate through the diagnostic process, and advocate for her family members. Listen in as you hear her share her story, how nutrition plays a critical role in recovery, and why you should never give up because you are a walking miracle.

By Jeff and Carrie:

October 29 is International Stroke Day. International Stroke Day is a day to raise awareness about strokes, understand the signs, prevention measures, and treatments available. One way to remember the signs of stroke is to use the F.A.S.T. acronym.

F: Face Droop
A: Arm Weakness
S: Speech Difficulty
T: Time to call 911

Today, we want to highlight some quotes from members who have had a stroke and how the Brain Injury Network has helped them in their transition back to their community.

How did BIN help you after your stroke?

Carrie: “BIN made me realize I can go back to work.”

Patrick: “It has given me a purpose and a place to go where I feel needed.”

Yvette: “BIN has given me a place to go, with people like me.”

Alfredo A.: “Learning the computer in Communications helped me understand things.”

Michael A: “It has improved my speech, and I just love being here!”

Jess: “BIN has given me a purpose, which has helped me immensely.”

By Jacob G. and Michael T. :

Stuttering is when someone's words come out choppy or their rhythm is often disrupted. For some people, it is considered Developmental Stuttering and identified/treated early in life (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). However, acquired brain injury (ABI) survivors may also experience stuttering post-injury. This is known as Neurogenic Stuttering. With Neurogenic Stuttering, people may experience decreased speed in their speech, delayed pauses, or repeated sounds due to injury affecting their motor planning or speech control (Mayo Staff, 2024; Mathew, 2025). As many of our members can attest, Speech-Language Pathologists frequently aid in overcoming many symptoms of ABI and stuttering through therapy.

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)
Individuals with disabilities who receive Social Security disability benefits can receive career development between ages 18 through 64. State organizations leading the campaign for employment for the disabled community include: Texas Workforce Commission in partnership with Workforce Solutions and the offices of the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities in association with programs Ticket To Work and the Texas Hire Ability Campaign. Obtaining services whether financial or rehabilitative to support those individuals with disabilities provides a substantially greater quality of life in the present while creating a broader range of adaptability for the future. As a member of Brain Injury Network, I personally hold these rights given to us through enacted legislation by governmental mandate. It is important to myself and all other members of BIN to give personal independence in the quality of lives we all share.

Rehab Without Walls (RWW) provides neurorehabilitation throughout Texas. On Friday, September 26, 2025, the BIND Clubhouse in Plano hosted RWW’s Brain Injury Virtual Connect (BIVC) Support Group’s Dallas in-person meet-up. The in-person meet-up was filled with camaraderie, joy, and FUN!

Thank you, Rehab Without Walls (therapists, patients & former patients), RWW virtual groups (Brain Injury Virtual Connect group, Coffee Chat, Yoga Without Walls), BIND members, and the therapist-patient teams for the planning, shopping, and serving snacks! We had a wonderful time building connections, laughing with friends, and playing games at the Clubhouse. We look forward to the 2026 Dallas-Fort Worth area meet-up!

Indigenous Peoples' Day in Texas is an official holiday that celebrates and honors Indigenous American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures. Indigenous people in Texas, such as the Coahuiltecans, Karankawas, Caddoes, Apache, Tonkawa, and Comanche. October is National Physical Therapy Month. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, this month is an opportunity to…

1. Raise awareness about the benefits of physical therapy
2. Appreciate what PTS, PTAs, and students do to transform lives
3. Promote resilience, support strength, mobility, and wellness throughout the lifespan

Mark K., a member at BIN Plano, learned just how important Physical Therapy is in helping you regain strength, balance, and mobility after an ABI.

“During my onboarding at CNS, the physical therapy team performed their interviews and evaluations. One of the challenges I had after the stroke was balance. When I was asked what I liked to do pre-stroke, I said that I was an avid skydiver, scuba diver, hiker, and through-hiker. I would spend hours, days, and weeks on the trail with Simon, my 100lb lab mix. Even though Simon is well-trained, he does like to chase squirrels and rabbits when given the chance. The topic turned to after the stroke.

One day, during a Physical Therapy session, the PTs had me put on a harness that they connected to a rail system to assist people with relearning how to walk. They informed me that I would only be allowed to fall four inches before immediately pulling me back up. Next, the PTs laid mats on the ground, with items underneath, to simulate an uneven trail I would hike with Simon. Although I did fall a couple of times as advertised, my balance improved with every session.

The whole experience was fantastic because the PTs came up with a unique solution to walk on uneven surfaces. I credit this approach to getting me back on the trail. Today, Simon has me up to 10-11 miles a day without stumbling!!! Accolades to my PTs at CNS.”
