“Text Neck” contributes to headaches, slow thinking and many other symptoms. Looking down at our phones, laptops or really anything too long causes uppercervical stress and can interrupt the normal plumbing of the brain, including blood and CSF flow. Little flow, no bueno. With Text Neck, the craniocervical region is stressed forward and it's misalignment is essentially what leads to the symptoms mentioned above. Poor posture leads to poor function, and, as we are spending more time with our devices this specific condition has been growing exponentially.

Over a period of time, text neck leads to longer lasting problems, even chronic conditions. Being mindful of our posture day to day opens the door to improved mental functioning and reduced pain and stress on our bodies. Our team advocates GOOD structure, which leads to GOOD function. With Text Neck you literally feel the weight and pressure on the head and neck region. This pain and stress is actually a great reminder to reset and readjust our bodies to be in an upright, healthy posture.

An easy rule to avoid this condition is to keep books, devices, etc at eye level. If you find yourself looking below your shoulders, or worse, below the waist readjust. It's takes time to develop new habits but it's definitely worth it.

Summer First Aid Everyone Should Know

With more free time and more activity in the summer, injuries are common. Some injuries can be very harmful if not properly cared for. Here are some common injuries and how to treat them.

Concussions

Concussions are highly dangerous injuries and require medical attention. Concussions can have long-term effects on the brain if left untreated, so avoid activities that might cause them for you or others, like riding a bike without a helmet, climbing an unsafe tree, or hitting someone in the head. If you or someone you know suffers a blow to the head, keep an eye out for symptoms like headache or head pressure, nausea, dizziness, sensitivity to light or noise, confusion, and memory loss. Seek immediate medical attention if any symptoms appear.

Sunburns

Sunburns are often overlooked injuries but these can be very harmful, causing long-term damage to the skin. Signs of sunburn include redness in the skin, skin that feels warm to the touch, pain, swelling, or even headaches in severe cases. Prevent sunburns by staying hydrated, wearing clothing that protects your skin, limiting your time in the sun, and, of course, wearing sunscreen (of SPF 30 or higher). Treat sunburn with frequent cool (not cold) baths or showers, drinking water, and applying aloe gel. For severe cases, visit a doctor.

Sprains

Sprains are a common injury that are not normally taken seriously. If a sprain is not properly taken care of, this can result in long-term tissue and cartilage damage. Usually, the best treatment for sprains is rest, ice, compression, and elevation, which can be remembered as the acronym R.I.C.E. Visit a doctor if you get a sprain. Having a knowledge of basic first aid are important life skill. Keep these in mind and if unsure of what to do in a medical situation, seek out professional help.
