We expect things to go in an order. A logical, linear order. Birth, school, partnering, parenthood, retirement, death. We expect our children, once we are beyond old, will gently lay us in our final resting place. When that order is violated, when parents have to bury children it is a violation of the natural order that we use to understand our world. It defies all the rules of life as we understand them. Parents aren’t supposed to bury children. Children arent supposed to preceed their parents in death. Children arent supposed to kill other children.
But today in Frisco Texas, one child killed another. The why seems almost insignificant to the magnitude of the loss. Losing a child is not only loss of the life; it is a murder of the future. It’s a slaughter of hope.
These things scare us. We recoil. Shut down. Shut in. Shut up. We need to stop shutting off and instead open up, open out, and openly discuss the feelings these kids are having. We owe it to our future to talk about all the things. We need to talk as talking is a way to honor the victim, to learn from the alleged perpetrator and find a way to make this the last child on child crime. We owe it to the generations behind us. By “it” I mean a world safe from children killing children.
Talk to your kids. LISTEN TO THEM. Follow your instincts and if I can be of help… you call me at anytime.
