Chronic, low-grade inflammation can speed up the aging process - inside the body and on the skin. One of the most powerful tools for slowing it down? Your diet. The foods you eat daily can either fuel inflammation or help fight it. Thatโs why following a nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory eating plan is so essential. So read on as Dr. Tim and I show you how to ensure your diet will help keep chronic inflammation at bay and live an anti-inflammatory lifestyle!
1. Gluten - Gluten can trigger an immune response in your gut that causes inflammation. To combat this, choose gluten-free foods that are made with alternative flours such as almond, coconut & cassava.
2. Sugar - One of the biggest dietary drivers of inflammation, consuming high amounts of sugar spikes blood glucose and insulin levels, triggering inflammation. Instead, look for foods that have a low glycemic index, do not contain fructose or are sweetened with natural monk fruit, stevia or xylitol.
3. Artificial Sweeteners - Mostly known as Aspartame, Sucralose and Saccharin, artificial sweeteners may be sweet but are not healthy. They are highly inflammatory and have a neurotoxic effect on your brain that may lead to mood disorders.
4. Conventionally Raised Meat/Processed Meat and Dairy - Hormones, antibiotics and GMOโs in some processed meats can trigger inflammation due to higher levels of saturated fats, preservatives and nitrates. Choose pasture-fed and pasture-finished meats and grass-fed raw dairy to help lower inflammation and support overall wellness.
5. Highly Processed Oils - Commercially prepared foods tend to use vegetable oils (such as corn, canola, soybean, & peanut) that are high in Omega-6, which can trigger inflammation. While you can't change what the restaurants use, choosing alternative organic oils such as coconut, avocado, olive & flaxseed at home will help keep your own meals from making inflammation worse!
