Baby Begin was started by Jennifer Todd-Barnard, OTR out of a passion to educate families on how to keep their new baby's head round. She has been a pediatric Occupational Therapist for 15 years. For the past eight years, she has been involved in treating infants with plagiocephaly (misshapen head) and torticollis (tight neck). She worked for Cranial Technologies, Inc., which is the leading provid

er of cranial molding helmets. She has treated thousands of patients and has been actively involved in educating physicians, families and other therapists in the community. Jennifer possesses the unmatched experience and knowledge about this common and often preventable condition. There is a very small window of opportunity to affect babies and their head shape. Jennifer is dedicated to educating parents and physicians alike on how to minimize the risk of plagiocephaly. Skull deformities have numerous medical and social implications. She would like to see every baby have the opportunity to begin life with a beautiful round head!

Babies who have torticollis/plagiocephaly will often NOT sit straight in their carseat (think asymmetry). If you can be cognizant of their positioning when you start your car journey, this can alleviate some neck tightening and potential discomfort. Here’s the trick. Start at the hips - get them as even across as possible. This will then help with the trunk that you are going to do next. Check to make sure shoulders are straight across. Trunk needs to be in line with the hips. Finally, get that little head/neck as straight up as possible. We know - when baby falls asleep sometimes it will tilt to the side. That’s unavoidable. But you can always START in a good position.

Torticollis is a muscle imbalance which causes asymmetries throughout an infants body. These asymmetries can appear in multiple ways, not just a neck tilt! Be on the look out for turn preferences, trunk curvature, reaching preferences, rolling preferences, etc. A good way to assess if your baby has any of these signs is to place them on the floor and watch them play! If you do notice any of these signs, a pediatric therapy evaluation may be necessary to get to the underlying root cause.

Comment NECK and we will send you a link to our Parent Torticollis Course!! Great way to get going on a straighter neck.

Ever notice your baby tilting their neck pretty far like the baby on the left? If that's a common thing for them, odds are, they probably have some Torticollis. Torticollis is a condition that causes tightening of the SCM muscle often resulting in a tilt and head turn preference. This condition is easily treatable with Occupational or Physical Therapy; however, if it's left unnoticed and untreated, it could lead to development issues and head flattening. If your worried your baby does this a lot, scroll through your camera roll! See a reoccurring tilt, seek out help from your pediatrician or a local pediatric therapist!

Being able to recognize the signs and symptoms of Plagiocephaly could save you lots of headache further down the road. Approximately 50% of babies will have some type of head flattening- the only way to fix head flattening is through strategic repositioning or a helmet. The sooner a parent is able to recognize those signs and start intervening through one of the routes mentioned above, the better outcomes their baby will have. Early intervention is key 🔑
