Baby Begin was started by Jennifer Todd-Barnard, OTR out of a passion to educate families on how to keep their new baby's head round. She has been a pediatric Occupational Therapist for 15 years. For the past eight years, she has been involved in treating infants with plagiocephaly (misshapen head) and torticollis (tight neck). She worked for Cranial Technologies, Inc., which is the leading provider of cranial molding helmets. She has treated thousands of patients and has been actively involved in educating physicians, families and other therapists in the community. Jennifer possesses the unmatched experience and knowledge about this common and often preventable condition. There is a very small window of opportunity to affect babies and their head shape. Jennifer is dedicated to educating parents and physicians alike on how to minimize the risk of plagiocephaly. Skull deformities have numerous medical and social implications. She would like to see every baby have the opportunity to begin life with a beautiful round head!

Here’s one of the most common questions we get: what makes a head flat? While some of these are unavoidable, others aren’t! Encouraging lots of tummy time, avoiding excessive container usage, adapting the way you hold your baby, and seeking professional assistance to MINUTE you notice a turn preference are all ways you can actually prevent your baby from potentially needing a helmet. 🤝

The Guppy stretch is one of our favorite exercises for babies with front of the neck tightness/lots of body tension! The goal of this stretch is to open up the front of your baby’s neck. It can be done over a ball like shown, or you can try doing it over your legs, a rolled up towel/blanket, a pillow, or whatever else you may find laying around. If you notice lots of redness within the front of that neck, know that could be indicator of other things (like tethered oral tissues) and it would be worth contacting a pediatric therapist to further assess the rest of the neck for Torticollis or any of those tethered oral tissues previously mentioned. And… keep doing the Guppy! As long as there’s redness or tension, the Guppy will be beneficial to get in a couple of times a day 👍🏼

Your pediatrician mentioned your baby has Torticollis and you’re confused on where to start with stretching? Here’s our thoughts ➡️

ALWAYS contact a pediatric therapist who specializes in Torticollis and have your baby assessed in person by that therapist! Babies should be thoroughly assessed to figure out exactly which side of the neck is tight, if there’s any abnormalities with their presentation, and if there are any other areas of the body being affected.

While Torticollis can absolutely be corrected, it MUST be addressed properly through therapeutic interventions. If it goes not properly treated, it can leads to other problems… like flat spots, developmental delays, coordination issues, etc. So- just contact a therapist! You won’t regret it!
