Baby Begin was started by Jennifer Todd-Barnard, OTR out of a passion to educate families on how to keep their new baby's head round. She has been a pediatric Occupational Therapist for 15 years. For the past eight years, she has been involved in treating infants with plagiocephaly (misshapen head) and torticollis (tight neck). She worked for Cranial Technologies, Inc., which is the leading provider of cranial molding helmets. She has treated thousands of patients and has been actively involved in educating physicians, families and other therapists in the community. Jennifer possesses the unmatched experience and knowledge about this common and often preventable condition. There is a very small window of opportunity to affect babies and their head shape. Jennifer is dedicated to educating parents and physicians alike on how to minimize the risk of plagiocephaly. Skull deformities have numerous medical and social implications. She would like to see every baby have the opportunity to begin life with a beautiful round head!

If you’re a pediatric therapist, you know how tricky this can be sometimes 🤪 Parents! If you notice your baby doing any type of crawl that looks asymmetrical or atypical like the one above… odds are, there may be a muscle imbalance that needs to be addressed.

What’s going on in this video?
↗️ Baby has tightness on the RIGHT side of his body. The tightness is in his neck, shoulder, trunk, foot, leg… pretty much his whole body causing this asymmetrical crawling pattern.
↗️ Baby is leading only with his right side and only sits in one direction… this means he’s probably got some weakness on the left side of his body as well. This muscle imbalance can lead to impairments in core strength, balance, posture, and more if not addressed.

The longer a baby crawls like this, the harder it is to break. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, reach out to a pediatric therapist and get your baby hands and knees crawling like a pro!

Therapists! When assessing a baby with Torticollis, do you often notice any of these symptoms as well? Each of these could be indicators of a potential Myofascial Restriction. This is why a full-body assessment for Torticollis is necessary, every time! Get inside the mouth to see what else may be going on besides just neck tightness! You make be initiating every tension reduction strategy you can think of, but if the mouth isn’t addressed, tension will stay the same.

Did you know we have a new continuing education course “Tethered Oral Tissues” that takes a deep dive into all things related oral restrictions? Check out Part 1 and 2 on our website!

One of the most common things we hear from parents going through head shape journeys with their baby is that they wish they would’ve taken action sooner! If you have a concern about your baby having a turn preference, neck tilt, flat spot, development delay, etc.- your concern is there for a reason and you SHOULD NOT wait to take action. Head shape and neck tightness is especially time sensitive. There’s no need to wait until your baby’s 4-month appointment to decide it’s time to get to work; we can help RIGHT NOW! ✅
