Baby Begin, LLC Baby Begin offers home treatment for babies w/ Plagiocephaly (flat head) & Torticollis by an expert

Baby Begin was started by Jennifer Todd-Barnard, OTR out of a passion to educate families on how to keep their new baby's head round. She has been a pediatric Occupational Therapist for 15 years. For the past eight years, she has been involved in treating infants with plagiocephaly (misshapen head) and torticollis (tight neck). She worked for Cranial Technologies, Inc., which is the leading provid

er of cranial molding helmets. She has treated thousands of patients and has been actively involved in educating physicians, families and other therapists in the community. Jennifer possesses the unmatched experience and knowledge about this common and often preventable condition. There is a very small window of opportunity to affect babies and their head shape. Jennifer is dedicated to educating parents and physicians alike on how to minimize the risk of plagiocephaly. Skull deformities have numerous medical and social implications. She would like to see every baby have the opportunity to begin life with a beautiful round head!

But really! Our mission at Baby Begin is to keep babies OUT of a helmet, and create round heads with loose necks. Containers aren’t the best for that. Our rule of thumb- try and decrease your container usage to LESS THAN 2 hours total per day… this includes the car seat, boppy pillows, baby loungers, bouncers, swings, etc. Instead, put baby on the floor and watch their strength excel. Need alternative solutions besides just the floor? Let us know in the comments ⬇️ You got this!

Any tummy time is time well spent! Our recommendation is to put baby on the FLOOR and challenge them when possible; however, we recognize that some babies love it more than others. That’s not to say your baby can’t do tummy time on the floor, but that they just may require some extra support. Try propping their elbows in your hands, use lots of visually stimulating toys, try doing it in front of a mirror, try it at various times of the day, and try moving from short stretches to long stretches of tummy time! Figuring out tummy time can be tricky at first if your baby isn’t a huge fan, but you got this! With consistency and you cheering them on, they’ll begin to love it! You’re doing amazing attempting tummy time in anyway… keep it up! 👏🏻👏🏻

If your baby isn’t hitting one of their milestones on time, it may be a good time to seek out a consult from a pediatric occupational or physical therapist! Our job as pediatric therapists is to assess your child’s development, figure out why they may not be meeting that milestone, and assist them in learning what to do in order to hit that milestone (and future ones) appropriately. Therapy is a GOOD thing and can be used as a tool to assist and educate parents on how to help their baby be most successful when it comes to mobility. Do you live in Texas and are looking for a good therapist? Let’s talk! We have therapists all over DFW, Houston, and Austin! 💥

When a baby has Torticollis, one side of the neck has a tight muscle! This tight muscle causes baby to have difficulty fully rotating their head (chin over shoulder) to their non-preferred side. When they attempt looking that direction on their own, they tend to lift the opposite shoulder to compensate for their neck tightness. By gently holding down that opposite shoulder, you’re preventing baby from compensating and providing a gentle neck stretch!

‼️It’s important to note, if you suspect your baby has Torticollis, you need to seek invention from a pediatric occupational or physical therapist before beginning stretches! It’s important to figure out which side of the neck is tight and to have an individualized plan for your baby.

Knowledge is power 💡 Whether you’re currently pregnant, have a newborn, work with infants everyday… this info applies to YOU! The first 4 months are crucial to a baby’s head shape. If you’re able to spot a turn preference and flat spot within those first few months and you seek intervention, your baby will most likely have pretty good results- and maybe without a helmet if you use a Baby Begin therapist!
