Residents at Long Island State Veterans Home are using virtual reality to help fight PTSD.
“You feel like you’re right there,” said 80-year-old Marine veteran Chuck Kurtzke while exploring the Great Barrier Reef. Mynd Immersive has a content library full of calming environments such as guided meditation, museum tours, or traveling across Europe, just to name a few.
While the World War II crowd prefers these types of serene environments, high octane experiences such as skydiving, race-car driving, or the flight deck of an aircraft carrier are especially popular among those who served in Vietnam, according to the home’s deputy executive director, Jonathan Spier.
Some more senior residents at the home are keeping mobile by using the technology to shoot arrows or go butterfly-catching. “Range of motion in a nursing home is important. If you don’t use it, you lose it,” Spier said. The Long Island facility has demonstrated such strong proof of concept over the years that Mynd Immersive’s programming has been rolled out in 75 veterans’ homes and counting across the United States.
